Comparison of R5, R5II and the R3 - Canon Community
May 13, 2025 - The R3 body is a tank by comparison and with the grips built in it just felt better in my hands. I am used to the 24 MP because of the R6 and because of the build quality and weather sealing I believe it will have extended longevity over the R5 MkII.

r/canon on Reddit: Canon R3 or Canon R5 Mark II
May 10, 2025 -

Canon R3 or R5 mark II? I wanted to upgrade from my R100. There’s no stores within 2.5 hrs to go look at them in person so I’m looking for advice. They are both on sale for $3999.99 which one is the better option they both seem relatively close on comparison. I do mostly sports and family portraits and children! My main lens will be a RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. Just looking for some advice before I purchase later on tonight(online). Thanks!

As a very recently retired Sports photographer, the R3 worked for me considerably better than the R5II. But then I carried 2xR3's and 2xR7's and a variety of glass from 16mm to 800mm depending on the need. My workhorse glass was a 300mm 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8, these stayed on the R3, the R7 would have the 16mm and a second 300/2.8 for wide shots and extra reach. In my bag I would always have a 24-105 F4 and a fast 85. For motorsport I would add the 600 and 800 to the bag too. R3 AF is insanely good and speed of operation is blistering - I get the pre-capture on the R5, but I am not a spray and pray photographer - small bursts are one thing, but hundreds of images that vary by milliseconds will piss my editor off like you would not believe. 24MP files sizes are way easier to deal with than the 45MP R5 - again my editor would reject the huge images and insist that I shoot in 24MP JPEG so that she can easily deal with them. The battery life comparison is not even slightly close - I can easily get 2k shots from the R3 and I had a stack left from my 1DX days. The R7 struggles beyond a few hundred. Ergonomics are not even close, the R3 is perfection, the R5 needs the added grip and even then it creaks slightly and does not feel integrated. Add in weather sealing, build quality and design for purpose and the R3 wins and it's not even close. For family stuff the R3 is massive overkill - its big and heavy and chunky and you will not carry it all the time, coming from the R100, it is hard to explain just how big and heavy the R3 is. For family stuff I use my R7 and often borrow my daughter's R10 - so much smaller and lighter. Pair it with a 16 or 24mm pancake and you have a brilliant pocketable camera that you can get impossibly good results from, or you can stick in P or A+ mode and hand to non-camera savvy people to get great results. Additionally do not forget that the R100 is a crop sensor camera, the R5 and R3 are Full frame, the 24-70 is suddenly going to feel a heck of a lot shorter, so you are giving up a lot of reach. It's a lovely lens, but on the R3/R5 its a wide to low-power tele, on the R100/R10/R7 it is a wide-ish to portraits and a little beyond. R100 -> R5 is a massive jump.

IMO, the only advantage for the R3 is a weather sealed pro body with great ergonomics. I had the 1D Mk3 many years ago and as far as ergonomics go it was the best camera I've ever had. The R5 Mk II autofocus is on par with the R3, it also has pre-capture, which the R3 does not have. If you shoot sports, pre-capture is a game changer allowing you to capture moments you'd be very lucky to get shots of without it. Also, 45MP doesn't hurt. P.S. There's a recent video by Jared Polin where he compared R5, R5Mk2 and R3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6NbWzMvS7Q

June 30, 2025 - Eye control on the Canon R1 and Canon R5 Mark II is the feature that allows the camera to determine which subject I am looking at and move the focus point to that subject. I know that the Canon R3 had this feature as well, but I find that with the much improved technology in the Canon R1, it now makes this useable for the first time.

Hi guys!

I’m looking to switch from Nikon D850 to Canon for multiple reasons but I’m curious which of the three cams above has the BEST autofocus and suits my work of feeld.

I shoot events fulltime from festivals/artists to big congresses and dark techno clubs so I’m willing to pay the premium to improve my workflow since getting the right shot can be crucial. I don’t care about video nor which camera has the fastest shutter or burst speed so no billion fps needed.

Thanks in advance!!

r/canon on Reddit: R3 vs R5 Mark ii vs R6 Mark ii
October 9, 2024 -

So as the title says I'm struggling between picking the R3 vs R5 mark ii and the R6 mark ii. I really like the preshooting features of the R5 mii and its video capabilities along with the 45 megapixel sensor. I mainly do sports but I have been doing more portraits and landscape so the R5 seems better suited for that than the R3. I am considering the R6 mark ii simply because it's half the price. I think the extra price for the R3 or R5mii would be worth it but I wanted to get some more opinions. I currently shoot on an 80d but I do want to upgrade to mirrorless. Is it worth it saving up for the R3 or the R5 mii because I don't want to be in the future regretting not waiting a little to buy a nicer camera?

The other thing is, is that I want to buy the camera new most likely as I've never bought one new and I think it would be a fun experience to unbox one new at least once.

Hello everyone! I’m currently making a switch from Nikon to Canon. I do a lot of portrait work, product, wildlife, sports and race photography. Right now I’m debating on whether to get the R3 or the R5mk ii. Obviously I’m going to get the r5 ii new when it comes out which is 4300 but I’m seeing prices of the r3 being around 3200-3600 which is almost a grand difference

So far I looked at bh to compare the two and so far the only noticeable difference really is the mp. Should I save the $1000 and put it in a good L lense or pull the trigger and wait for the r5 ii?

r/canon on Reddit: Deciding between the R3, R5II or R1
July 28, 2024 -

I have an R8 and have had plenty of thoughts surrounding the desire for the higher 45 MP. I will be upgrading camera bodies in September and have been mainly considering the R3 or the R5, and I'm currently leaning towards the R3. I currently shoot exclusively with EF L-series glass.

I should also explain that though this has primarily been an expensive hobby (it's funny because it's true), I am also now getting into paid shoots. However, my main focus is the love of the art, and not as a primary source of income.

My main interest is shooting people; I've recently shot a niece's engagement, wedding and reception; a nephew's Prom photos of 5 couples, family photos, portraits, etc. This all obviously had me leaning towards the R5. And I honestly have been quite satisfied with results of the 24 MP on the R8, but I have a friend who has an R5 and I do of course see the benefits of being able to crop/zoom in, larger prints and whatnot.

However, I have also recently gotten into sports photography since I currently have three young teenagers (one daughter, two sons) who are and will continue to be in sports for at least the next 5 years (swim team, basketball, baseball/softball, lacrosse, football/flag, volleyball), which ultimately is leaning me towards the R3.

So for the moment, my conclusion is that the R3 gives me the best of both worlds in regards to what I shoot. I was hoping that the R5II would be an improvement where I could use it adequately for sports, to essentially be an upgraded R3 with 45 MP.

And I have even considered splurging and getting an R1, but with 24 MP, at the moment I would rather go with an R3. My primary hesitation on spending the extra cash for an R1 is my disappointment in it not being, in my opinion, truly a "flagship", meaning that it doesn't have the literal best of all options. I'm thinking 45 MP, Global shutter, 40 fps electronic, 120 fps burst, limitless buffer or near to it, etc.

Admittedly, I need to read up more, and watch more review videos about the R5II and the R1. I would genuinely appreciate input about these two new behemoths, the good and the bad, thoughts for or against, and then please specifically if you believe the R1 is worth the extra cost to be considered over the R3.

Do you think the R5II would be a good consideration for sports? Or should I stick to the R3?

Or possibly the R1...?

Thanks in advance!

May 13, 2025 - Any weakness in the the sealing structure of any camera is a risk. I don't think this is about insulation so much as an air conditioning and cooling structure - they are trying to let hot air out.
