r/AskPhotography on Reddit: Canon r7 or Nikon z5II?
July 20, 2025 -

Hi! I’m deep into the rabbit hole of choosing my first digital camera, and I’m stuck on the r7 and z5ii. Right now the r7 goes for 1400 euros and the sigma 18-50 for 540. The z5ii is more expensive at 1700 for the camera and 800~ for the 24-120 f4. I like that the r7 has greater range due to the crop and also a higher mp count, but I also like that the Z5ii has better image quality and low light performance. I also think Nikon as a company and their lenses are more interesting. If I could buy the r7 with the Nikon 180-600 life would be great, but they only have the 100-500 which is very expensive and the 200-800 which can’t really out resolve a 32mp crop sensor. Should I be considering the Z50II as well? Someone please push me in the right direction here

I've decided to upgrade from my Sony a7, but I'm cut up on whether to go with Canon or Nikon, I mainly do landscape photography with sometimes doing street photography. I also want to get into more night time photography. I can get either at a similar price with the z7ii being a little bit cheaper, I've heard the autofocus on the z7ii isn't the best but I didn't think that would affect me since i only shoot photos and not videos

So I am reaching the end of my Bachelor's education and want to begin a career in motorsport and automotive photography. I was hooked ever since I found out you can make a living taking pictures of race cars. I want to set myself up for the next few years and have a reliable camera that I can grow with as I have with my Sony a6500. I have very few native Sony lenses, so I am not worried about moving to a new brand, but more about which one I want to jump into. I have some Nikon glass as I shoot lots of film on my F5 and have been adapting that to the Sony. My budget is $3,000 (tax included) and I've settled for the Canon R5 or Nikon Z7ii. Which of these cameras would suit the fast-paced and often dirty conditions that can come in Motorsports?

Stills only, or video + stills? They'll all do the jobs you're asking, some are better than others at different genres. AF probably better on R6ii and R5 for street, events, and wildlife but Z7ii could probably do the job, just not as well. If you want MOAR megapixels for landscape, the r6ii is out, leaving the R5 vs. the Z7ii. I'd generalize by saying if you want the best autofocus and higher fps, probably the R6ii and R5 are better choices. But IMO a question you're ignoring and shouldn't be is which lenses do you envision yourself wanting to own and use? Do you dream of shooting street with a 28-70mm f2 zoom lens, or maybe you like the cheap Viltrox primes available for the Z mount? Do you look at the Nikon S glass and 180-600 for wildlife and drool? Or do you think, wow, I'd love to shoot an R5 in crop mode with a 800mm f11 prime? Etc. etc. Also, have you owned and shot Nikon or Canon in the past? Some folks have and it's easier to stick with the brand you know so there's familiarity with the controls, the direction the zooms rotate (opposite directions for Canon and Nikon unfortunately), color science, etc. Also, your point about "mechanical + electronic shutter" makes little to no sense. Not sure what you're trying to get at here. In the end, if you really don't care about lenses or care to research lenses (I think that would be foolish if you're spending this much but if that's what you want to do...), I'd probably recommend you go with either the R6ii or the R5 on the basis of superior AF performance and burst speed.

r/canon on Reddit: Canon R5 vs R5 Mk II or Z8 if I own R7?
October 17, 2024 -

Hi there!

I am a hobbyist photographer, shooting wildlife, portraits, street, and anything with action. I currently have a Canon R7 with RF 100-500 mm f/4.5-7.1 and Rf-S 18-150 mm f/3.5-6.3.

I’d like to save up for a full frame camera down the line. I’m not satisfied with the AF performance of the R7, particularly for birds. I also want better low light performance and better bokeh with nicer lenses for portraits.

I’m considering either sticking with the Canon system and getting a R5 or R5 Mk ii with Rf 24-70 mm f/2.8 or ditching the system (sell the Canon) to go to Nikon Z8, and getting the 180-600 mm and several prime lenses.

I love the lens options on Nikon but not sure how its AF will stack against the R5 and R5 Mkii for wildlife photography. One additional benefit would be that my wife shoots a ZfC already.

Please let me know if you’d like to opine!

I know standards have shifted over the years but hearing someone is not satisfied with the AF of the R7 blows my mind. Isn't that basically the strong suit of the R7? Is the firmware up to date? Have you spent enough time setting up the autofocus? Created custom settings for different occasions etc? I find it hard to believe that the R7 AF is not good enough. From what I've read it's supposed to be stellar. Edit: nothing wrong with going full frame, but so far the limiting factor for portraits are the lenses, hands down. Put any

Of those R5mkii is best. Z8 is a fine camera and if you/your wife know how to use Nikon it'd be fine but R5mkii just has benefit of being several years newer and AF etc being a bit better. I do have questions/want to point some stuff out I’m not satisfied with the AF performance of the R7, particularly for birds. What case settings and AF settings are you using? Are you using exposure sim? If you are using exposure sim then your iso will affect your AF in lowlight. If you try to underexpose an image under impression it'll help with noise your AF tracking will struggle. If you expose correctly it'll do better. I also want better low light performance One of these is R6 and one is R7. 51,200 iso and same settings for both. As you can see there isn't really a noise advantage for R6. Why? Because once you have to crop a FF image to make up for "less reach" you lose your dynamic range/noise advantage. You won't be able to tell really on this image but blown up on computer the R7 image having a lot more mp is pretty noticeable. better bokeh with nicer lenses for portraits. This is a lens issue not really a camera issue. Sigma is coming out with some 1.4 primes for rf-s very soon. A R7 with 1.4 lens will do better with noise and "bokeh" than a FF with 2.8 lens. The sigma 18-50 will do much better than the kit lens too. Nikon Z8, and getting the 180-600 mm and several prime lenses. This is partially personal opinion but I think the 100-500 is a better lens than the 180-600. I've been out with people with the lens on z9/z8 and briefly used their setups. The 180-600 is a decent amount heavier, not as sharp, and AF was slower than R7 100-500. The z8 battery life vs R7 is also atrocious. Wild Alaska just made a R5mkii vs z8 video and z8 battery life was a big complaint. The biggest benefit going to Nikon would be you and your wife could share lenses. It will cost you a lot more to move to FF and especially to a different brand though. You could get several very good lenses for the R7 to solve some of your issues instead.

Hi there.

I was just wondering which camera is really better for my use case. I would like to take high-quality HDR stills, but also be able to occasionally record in 4K. I couldn't really find any good source on how good the timelapse feature is on the EOS R5, but the 8K recording and bigger sensor size made it very attractive to me. How's the battery life on both of these devices? I heard the R5 has a relatively short battery and has overheating issues, whilst the Z7 has excellent battery life with both stills and video capture. I really have difficulty choosing between the two of them, could someone help me out? 😅
