Canon R6 Mark II: how much Dynamic Range?
The sensor in the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is estimated to provide 14.6 EV of dynamic range (DR). While no actual measurement of DR is available for the R6 Mark II, an estimate can be derived based on assessments of other cameras that have sensors ...

Max Dynamic Range for Canon R6
I don’t think your dynamic range can be improved with ISO. There are post processing tricks you can use (e.g. gamma), but otherwise the dynamic range is based on the quality of the sensor and the electronics responsible for converting the intensity of light on each pixel into an electrical signal. So just to clarify, R6ii is the best choice for lowlight out of the current R lineup?
R3 has a slight edge (1/2 stop or less I think) due to the BSI sensor, vs the FSI sensor in the R5, R6, R6II, and R8, but I don't see a practical difference. More on reddit.com

Dynamic range difference between new Canon R's and 6D/5D MK II
So I am really curios to know if switching to the new R-Series is a game changer in such aspects or is it even with the new sensors quite the same play. The difference is significant, but not necessarily so apparent until you're making adjustments to RAW files—that's where you'll really see the improvements—and it's mainly at lower ISOs. Here's a chart showing the R5 compared to the 6D and 5D II you mentioned. At base ISO, the R5 has an extra 2-1/2 over the others.but beyond 1000 it's not significant. More on reddit.com

Long time users. How's the r6 mark ii treating you?
I'm using R6 for 3 years and R6ii for 1 year now. I'm using both for professional video use. Answering your questions: Canon Log video is HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit. This means no Nvidia or AMD graphics cards have hardware acceleration for this video codec (only latest Intel graphics and Apple M1 or newer). If you have a stronger CPU, you can edit without proxies. Otherwise, it's required to have proxies. I don't have to use proxies for simple projects. If you underexpose Clog-3, your shadows will be just grey areas of noise. Use the histogram and assess the ideal exposure. On most shots, I tend to overexpose by one or two stops if require more details in shadows. One thing I miss on the R6ii is the lack of Clog-1. If I can't plan what shots are going to be in slow motion I prefer to shoot everything in 50/60fps with 360° shutter and deliver great looking full speed footage and a bit blurrier slow-mo. I rarely use Focus peaking while manually focusing but it's alright, I guess. EF adapter is great. Lightning fast focus on EF 16-35L ii, 24-70L ii, 70-200L ii. I wouldn't say RF lenses are any faster, though the majority RF lenses I work with are non L fixed lenses which all have slow AF, and the bulky 28-70L F/2.0, which has fast autofocus. I love how the end result looks when an experienced colorist does the final grade. Overexposed footage is way cleaner, but pushing it too far does harm as well (clipping aside). You can also just apply the official Canon LUT, tweak the curves little, and it looks pretty good on its own. More on reddit.com

Canon EOS R6 Mark II in-depth review: DPReview | Photography News, Gear Reviews & Community
Canon EOS R6 Mark II
One minor functional improvement comes from Canon's OVF simulation mode, which debuted on the EOS R3 and provides a more SLR-like display experience. On the R6 II, this feature doesn't benefit from the higher dynamic range display found on the R3, so it's a bit less compelling. The EOS R6 II arrives in one of the most competitive parts of the market, facing off against some very capable competition. We think it rises to the challenge.

October 11, 2023 - Your Raw files are going to have the best dynamic range they can produce. They just won't have the PQ data. ... The R6 mark II already has above average dynamic range, but if you have the gear, like an HDR monitor and GPU, you can shoot in HDR PQ.

Hands-On with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II: It's Basically a Mini R3 | PetaPixel
November 2, 2022 - When shooting in bright, ideal lighting conditions, I was pretty happy with the dynamic range of the new R6 II sensor. I found it was quite easy to bring up shadows and tone down highlights in all of the photos I edited for this hands-on, which were processed in Adobe Photoshop. Historically, Canon files have been a lot more generous in the shadows than in the highlights, but I found both were pretty generous here (though shadows are still easier to pull). The R6 Mark II doesn’t have a stacked sensor, and it also is not backside illuminated (BSI).

December 9, 2020 - The R6 has just 0.2 EV less dynamic range at ISO 400 or lower and gains just 0.06 EV in our computed low-light ISO (Sports) sensitivity value of 3394 ISO (vs 3248 ISO for the EOS-1D X Mark III, which is negligible).

r/canon on Reddit: Max Dynamic Range for Canon R6
December 4, 2021 -

Hi Everyone,

Have been using my r6 for a while now, and have had a few video projects. I shoot in Clog3 as I have the software to get the most out of it, and I increase ISO to 800 to max out dynamic range. This gets rid of gray space on the right side of the histogram, but there is still gray on the left side. Is there a way to make full use of this histogram? I was shooting in 4k, both 24 and 60 fps if it matters.

Canon R6 Mark III ISO & Dynamic Range Performance Review - Canon Rumors
December 3, 2025 - So if Canon has improved the cooling of the camera between successive models, it could be that after prolonged use, the EOS R6 Mark III may actually deliver superior results to its EOS R6 and EOS R6 Mark II predecessors. However, in practical terms, unless you continually photograph in the upper boundaries of the ISO range or sensor dynamic range, the differences are not vast, and in practical terms and you most likely will not notice it.

October 11, 2023 - If editing a RAW instead of sharing out of camera JPEG or HIF: In DPP, it seems better to me to disable the HDR PQ and use the dynamic range adjustment ( https://cam.start.canon/en/S002/manual/html/UG-04_EditImage_0040.html "Adjusting Dynamic Range" ) and if that is not enough, then use curves.
