While the 5D is built like a tank and the r6 is a bit more plasticky, i don't think it's a big issue at all. You take photos with it and (hopefully) don't knock it over someone's head. The 5D has a bit more resolution, but a stronger antialias filter, so sharpness-wise, they are really comparable. other than that, the r6m2 is clearly the superior camera: No need to micro adjust fast primes because of the missing mirror assembly Fast eye tracking autofocus great movie capabilities higher speed bursts and pre-burst capabilities EDIT: Better high iso performance I don't know where you got the idea, that the 5D supports more lenses, but the opposite is true: almost all EF lenses can be adapted to the R6 and work flawlessly. Even better than on a DSLR most of the time, since front- and backfocus isn't an issue anymore. Plus you can use the new RF lenses, most of which don't have an equal on EF mount. And for the price point on the rf lenses: simply adapt old ef glas for starters. I got some kick-ass EF primes for really cheap, since everyone is migrating to the RF lenses. and the only gripe with thirdparty lenses (af accuracy) is simply gone. The only downside is the added length because of the adapter, but that's not an issue for me personally. Answer from soylent81 on reddit.com

Canon R6 vs. Canon 5d Mark IV - Shannon Burke Photography
February 11, 2021 - As a personal preference, I prefer the colors of the R6 but there isn’t a huge difference between the Canon R6 vs. Canon 5d Mark IV – except the insanely good focus from the R6.

Upgrading from Canon 5D Mark IV to Canon R6 Mark II - Question
Went from IV to R6 with no large regrets. I sometimes miss the mpx count and the built in GPS, but nothing else that I can think of. You will love the R6 II. More on reddit.com

Canon 5D Mark IV or no?
The 5DIV is an incredible workhorse of a camera but it is based on older technology - especially the focussing system. I had a 5DIV and used it extensively until I got a R6 and then it sat on a shelf. The eye focus and multi-focus systems of the R6 are so much better that even if dropping a few megapixels, the number of keeper shots made the R6 that much more useable. It may be a different consideration if I was a serious landscape photographer who wanted long battery life, excellent weather sealing and my subject didn't move much, then I'd look to the 5DIV. That said, I wouldn't look at the RP or the R either. The R is just a repackaged 5DIV with poorer weather sealing. The better focusing et al came with the R5/6. I'd look for a new or refurbished R6 and go from there. The R8 also looks excellent for a lower budget. Basically a R6II without the IBIS and a smaller battery. Same sensor. The R6II is an incremental improvement on the R6 but mainly in shooting video. More on reddit.com

November 30, 2025 - My main point of confusion still stands: after a decade, shouldn’t we see a more noticeable improvement compared to the 5D IV’s older sensor? Clearly, many other aspects of imaging have improved over that time. Also, if the new sensor is truly that much better, and tests like these don’t capture it, then what exactly are these tests for? After all, the testers base their judgments on comparisons with other cameras. Click to expand... There is not much or any improvement in this department, not just Canon.

r/canon on Reddit: Is the Canon EOS R6 Mark II actually better than the EOS 5D MARK IV?
June 4, 2024 -

So I'm about to get into photography and go out on my own - PS: would love to hear your tips about going out on your own and entering the industry! (from AUS) - and I'm seriously debating whether to go with the 5D MARK IV or the R6 MARK II. I've heard the R6 MARK II is a great investment, and the upgrade is worth it. But at the same time I've heard SO many amazing things about how durable, and reliable the 5D Mark IV is - [EDIT: I mentioned earlier that I thought the lenses compatible with the 5D Mark Iv were NOT compatible with the R6 and I now know that is very wrong hahaha and it's useful to get an adapter - thank you everyone!]

I'm leaning more towards the R6 Mark II, but I just don't know if it's what I need. They're both big investments, and I don't want to be coerced into buying the more expensive one because it's 'newer and better'.

FYI: I'm looking to get my hands dirty in any shoots I can, but am hoping to walk towards like artistic portraits (close-up and full body) and shoots, maternity, engagements, family, portraits, literally anything. But I would love to have the ability of creating fun and artistic pieces.

THANK YOU!!!

Yes, good god yes. The autofocus in particular is night and day. Having owned both, if I had the option I wouldn't consider the 5D in that situation, just get an RF/EF adapter and use second hand EF lenses if you need to.

r/canon on Reddit: Upgrading from Canon 5D Mark IV to Canon R6 Mark II - Question
August 3, 2024 -

I currently have a Canon 5D Mark IV and am considering upgrading to a mirrorless camera. I've decided on the Canon R6 Mark II. I'm aware that the R6 Mark II has fewer megapixels than the 5D Mark IV, but I'm curious if this will feel like a big downgrade.

My primary focus is dog photography, so I'm particularly interested in the autofocus capabilities of the mirrorless system. For those who have made a similar switch, do you miss anything about the 5D Mark IV? How does the R6 Mark II compare in terms of overall performance and image quality?

Thanks in advance for your insights!
