Canon R6 MkII: Can this be my "do it all" camera? Sell me or scare me!
Videos
I’m torn on which camera I want to buy. I’m between an “Excellent Plus” rated 5D IV on KEH or an R6. The lenses I have are EF 24-70 f/2.8 L II USM, and a Sigma 35mm ART. The R6 will be about $700 more. I don’t plan on switching to R glass any time soon if I go with the R6, so I would be using the adaptor. My hold up is just the resolution of the R6. I‘ve never had a camera with that low of resolution and don’t have a great idea of how much it matters. I do tend to crop often but I’ve also been shooting with a prime lens for the last few years so the zoom lens I recently added might change that. The ISO and AF is obviously a super attractive feature of the R6 though. I see a lot of people comparing the R6 to the 5D as if R6 is the successor but it seems like the R6 is really the 6D successor - even so does it beat out the 5D? The 5D seems like a really safe bet - old reliable workhorse. Would love to hear from those who have used both. For context, I shoot a little bit of everything - I mainly do documentary/travel which can include landscapes, but I also do portrait work when commissioned. Thanks ahead of time!
- I guess a big part of the question is those who went from shooting with 30MP to 20MP - how much do you find yourself missing those 10MP ?
here's some of what you can expect:
– 32.5MP FF CMOS Image Sensor
– Up to 40fps photo shooting with 20-frames of pre-continuous shooting
– Open Gate recording at up to 7K 29.97p in 10-bit MP4 or 12-bit RAW
– 4K 120fps, dual card slots, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, and so much more

I currently use an original EOS R, which I've always liked quite well but has always struggled a bit with sports/action stuff. I've been thinking about upgrading to an R6 MKII. Basically what I need is a "do it all" camera that works with a one-man, fast workflow setup for both photos and video. That is to say I need the camera to do the following:
-
Be small enough to do relatively unobtrusive street photography (my favorite style of photography)
-
Action/sports. I sometimes do photo and video stuff for parents at local middle/high school events. I'm looking for something that does really clean 1080p, or possibly a nice 4K24. I also need the still photography to have a good drive speed, and fast AF for sports games (football, basketball, baseball, etc).
-
Macro. Preferably with in-camera focus stacking
-
Good skin tones straight out-of-camera if needed.
Based on looking at some test footage, I feel pretty confident that the R6 MkII is a good choice, but just in case I've overlooked something I wanted to ask here.
If it matters, I own a bunch of EF and a few RF lenses already, plus a handful of batteries for the EOS R that should make transitioning to an R6 MkII reasonably straightforward. I pretty much buy Canon lenses only, so I'm not super concerned about the lack of 3rd party RF glass. My budget is $2,000 for the body. I'm planning to take some time with this and probably buy a used or certified refurbished camera. Maybe I'll see if I can pick up something on a Black Friday or Christmas sale.
Does anybody have any negative experiences with the R6 MkII that should scare me, or am I overlooking anything that might make the R6 MkII bad for my use cases?
