r/canon on Reddit: R7 vs. R8
July 15, 2024 -

G' day,

Previously coming from the Canon platform (Rebel T5) I've decided it's time for an upgrade. After some lengthy research, I've considered my budget and narrowed it down to 2 cameras but am having difficulty deciding which one I should purchase.

A little about what got me into photography/what I shoot:

I always grew up around and loved playing with cameras. So when I became a high schooler, I decided to take a few photography classes. From there, I haven't been able to put my camera down. I mainly shoot car photography and landscapes in my spare time and am noticing a general lack of quality with 95% of my shots. I feel that my current camera is becoming outdated and that now would be the best time to invest in a new camera. With that said, these are the current pros I found from each of my preferred cameras.

R7 pro's:

  • Larger sensor

  • Contains IBS

  • Longer battery life

  • Extra card slot

R8 pro's:

  • Full frame

  • Seemingly better video capabilities

  • Stronger low-light quality

  • Newer/slightly cheaper

  • Most professional creators prefer the R8's capabilities compared to the R7's (from sources viewed)

-- I initially found myself drawn to the R7's larger sensor, battery life, and especially IBS features. However, almost all YouTube videos make it seem the R8 has a slight edge over the R7. I do want to start taking more videos/rollers of cars and wouldn't mind the improved video quality that the R8 boasts. Not to mention the full-framed R8's performance in darker scenes. My only worry is the smaller sensor in the R8 along with the lack of IBS would compromise picture quality and would be noticeably worse than that in the R7.

What are your thoughts?

Also... what are some cheap quality lenses I should look into buying for a camera like this?

Thanks a lot!

-Drake

I own both. I have used both in a professional setting and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Debating between R7 & R8:
People who own neither or the R7 like to bash the R8 calling it basic etc. In reality it’s a great camera and there’s a reason it’s at the same price point as the R7. I personally went with the R8 because I like to have more options when shooting wide and it’s overall better for video. The R8 is also the newer camera with better autofocus and sensor performance. The R7 has its spot but I would argue it’s the more niched camera of the two. Battery life is not an issue if you turn off the camera in between shots. Size is really great for travel. R8 is also weather resistant, just not “sealed”. More on reddit.com

Sell me on R7 vs R8
R7 and sigma rf-s 10-18 and 18-50 will do fantastic for landscapes and general walk-around. Throw in the rf 100-400 for a great wildlife setup. The R8 would do good with the RF 24-105 F4 and RF 16 2.8 for landscape and walk-around. The issue would be for wildlife the RF 100-400 really isn't long enough a lot of the time and you'd need a longer lens like RF 100-500 or RF 200-800. Both much larger and more expensive. The 24-105 is also more expensive. The R7 is probably a better landscape camera than the R8 is a wildlife camera. Also slight correction the R8 AF is a bit better in some situations. For wildlife the R7 will often do better because you can be further away and still have subject large in frame More on reddit.com

r/canon on Reddit: Canon R8 vs R7 - real world differences
October 9, 2023 -

Hello! I'm debating buying either an R7 or R8 to upgrade from my Canon 80D. I do mostly wildlife (birding primarily) and macro photography. I'd also like to dabble with more video and portrait photography. On paper, I know all the differences between the R7 and R8, but real world performance, is one better than the other? I've heard that the R7 has AF issues with EF glass (pulsing on Sigma 150-600C) and has a low readout speed. While the R8 has worse battery and ergonomics. But is FF significantly better than crop that a more stripped down R8 is better than R7?

r/canon on Reddit: Debating between R7 & R8:
August 18, 2024 -

Im trying to chose between the EOS R7 & R8 which are both mid/low level, mirrorless, and digital; I want your input to help me decide - I shoot in a hobbiest capacity in a wide range of scenarios such as landscapes, cars (especially at night) and shoot the former two the most, well as portraits & wildlife.

I’ve thought of some pros and cons between the two:

R8:

  • low weight, full frame, great ISO range (better for night shots)

  • single card slot, low battery life, no weather sealing (not great for being outdoors in an often wet environment)

R7:

  • dual card slot, very long battery life, weather sealed, better white balance settings, IBIS, mechanical shutter, sturdy

  • crop sensor, a bit bulky and pretty heavy (not great for hiking as I normally do)

Can you all help point me in a direction to help me decide on which of these two cameras I should purchase?

r/canon on Reddit: Sell me on R7 vs R8
November 22, 2024 -

I've done research on what the two of them do. But I don't know how much stock to put into what I've read about each.

I'll keep it simple and tell you I'm really, truly, genuinely not interested in anything beyond the R7 or R8. Yes, even if you really want to tell me how great the R6 Mark ii is. Keep the focus on R7 vs R8, please.

I've had an EOS Rebel T6 for many years and am finally looking to upgrade to something borderline-professional. I am just a hobbyist but I travel internationally pretty regularly and want to take the best photos possible on my trips. I do take some wildlife photos when I can; it is not all just landscapes (relevant to the APS-C vs full-frame question).

What I like about the R7: I'm told it is packed full of features, particularly in regards to AF. APS-C sensor is good for the times when I'm shooting wildlife. Battery life is fantastic. What I don't like: ultimately I probably do more landscape photography than I do wildlife stuff, which means that the APS-C sensor is perhaps the "incorrect" choice over full-frame.

What I like about the R8: full-frame sensor. What I don't like: worse AF, much worse battery life (from what I am told), presumably lacking other general features compared to the R7 (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm told that it's just more of a beginner / intermediate camera compared to the R7, which worries me.

Tell me which of my assumptions here are correct, or overblown, or just plain wrong, to help me sort out what I should buy. TY in advance and such.

Edit: I should add I don't care about video at all.

You want the R7. Here's why: Wildlife and the extra crop of the aps-c is an obvious advantage on reach. MP count is higher, so also add to that ability to crop more into a shot. You mentioned landscapes - APS-C is just fine especially if you're using a tripod where the benefits of DOF and high ISO performance of a FF won't really matter if you're stabilized shooting and shooting at small apertures as landscapes typically call for anyway. You get many more of the quality of life features of a pro camera on the R7 vs the R8 One of the best benefits - you get access to the RF-S lenses from third parties now. The new prime set that was announced by Sigma looks sweet too. This will also cover your wider angle needs of a crop sensor, closing the gap on FF vs. APS-C differences. As a result, this translates to less money spent on FF glass. In spirit, the R7 gets you more closer to a 'pro' level camera in its overall package, despite the APS-C. The R8 is much more geared to be a FF camera first, but stripped down to get it in line from a budget standpoint. At the end of the day you will be happy and capable with any of those two cameras, so you don't really lose either way. But I do think you'll be more than happy with the R7 for your use cases.
