Yes, the R8 is very capable. It shares the same excellent sensor, autofocus, and overall performance of the R6 II but uses a smaller battery and cuts the dual card slots and full mechanical shutter along with slimming down the controls to save on weight and cost. You may prefer the ergonomics and dual card slots of an original R6 if you can get one for a similar price used though. I'm guessing the R6 II is more expensive than you wanted to go for? Is that Sigma 24-70mm an EF mount lens? Answer from GlyphTheGryph on reddit.com

Camera Review: Canon EOS R8
January 26, 2026 - Whilst I wouldn't say anything in photography is "affordable", the Canon R8 body (US$1499), Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 (US$299), and RF 50mm f/1.8 lenses (US$199) are pretty good value for money. I felt that the RF 24mm f/1.8 lens (US$599) is a little overpriced.

Canon EOS R8
The Canon EOS R8 is the company's entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera. It brings the sensor and autofocus from the EOS R6 II and combines them in a smaller, more affordable body. Here's our full look at this value-oriented Canon.

It's rare that we see an excellent review such as you have written with so much detail. I have three DSLR cameras that I actively use and two M-series mirrorless cameras too. Last year I purchased a Canon RP and one RF lens. I recently bought another RF lens. The Canon R7 and R8 are something ... More on dpreview.com
Canon R8 opinion and question
Huge upgrade. With noise reduction software on Lightroom I will bump up to iso 12800. More comfortably at 6400-8000. More on reddit.com
Wow the Canon R8 is EXTREMELY impressive.
So glad you’re enjoying it! I know people say gear doesn’t matter and it kinda doesn’t but it does bring a lot of excitement to the process. What setup do you have in terms of lenses? More on reddit.com

Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera: A Hands-on Review
I have gotten so used to working a lens’s manual focus ring that switching to pressing buttons on the back of a camera body feels completely foreign to me. The R8 lacks an autofocus joystick, a cost-saving omission on Canon’s part that some reviewers have complained about.

r/canon on Reddit: Is the Canon EOS r8 worth it?
October 24, 2024 -
I’ve been thinking of switching over from Sony a7iii to canon, primarily for the color science and the feel of canon, but is the eos r8 a good camera for professional work? I want to pair it with a 24-70mm or 28-70. I currently have a sigma 24-70

I would say go to a camera store and see if you can try it out because you’re just going to get mixed reviews from everyone who has used it. One guy said he had overheating issues(I’ve never experienced it) others have said battery life is ass( I’ve also never had to switch batteries in the middle of a shoot) not saying the battery life isn’t short but I personally have yet to experience it. The r8 is a fantastic camera but of course you need to form your own opinion about it so I’d say go to a camera store and put it in your hands:)

Canon EOS R8 Review + thoughts on EOS R system | Kristoffer Trolle
August 17, 2025 - Even if I really did buy into the Canon R system, I don’t know if I would want to put so much money into one focal length. And the size, to me if lenses are too big I never bring them. So that’s why I went with these cheaper lenses. The problem is that these lenses are only slightly updated from the EF equivalent lenses, a bit sharper but not something to really wow you. The 35mm f1.8 is an ok lens, I would keep it if I kept my R8 camera.

Canon EOS R8 Review - DustinAbbott.net
September 12, 2025 - It’s sensor was the rather disappointing one from the Canon EOS 6D MK II, whereas the EOS R8 has inherited the vastly superior sensor and autofocus system of the Canon EOS R6 MK II. The R6MK II was the “poor man’s” EOS R3, which I guess makes the EOS R8 the poor man’s EOS R6 MK II. But the EOS R8 benefits from inheriting from a very good camera, and the end result is a camera I had a lot of fun using despite its limitations. You can find my full thoughts by watching my video review here…or reading on.

April 28, 2023 - The Canon EOS R8. Is this the lightest, smallest, most diverse, and most affordable full frame Canon mirrorless camera yet? Let's see how it performs. I was really pleased to test this new full frame camera from Canon, and I can genuinely say that this feels like the lightest full frame camera I’ve ever tested, weighing in at just 414g. October 5, 2024 - DXO lost a customer here, but that is mostly because of the first perk of the R8. It being a modern Canon camera, the JPEG engine is outstanding - tweak it a bit to your liking with regards to sharpness, noise reduction, contrast and colours, and you are unlikely to miss RAWs, bar the most critical detail extraction/noise reduction in modern raw editors, in pursuit of large prints or pixel-peeping.

Canon EOS R8 hands-on: DPReview | Photography News, Gear Reviews & Community
February 13, 2023 - Now that I have an R8 in my hands, I just wish it sounded better and snappier. ML brings back the squishy shutter of a D70/D7xxx compared to a D200/D300/D500. I'm guess ready for a semi-silent mode with a customizable sound like 10yo point and shoots offered. ;) ... it is really bad we won't see the review of this camera. DPReview should be sold to any company that can take good care of this lovely community. ... Canon is confusing everyone with so many R models.
