*sry if my English is not so good*
I will be posting this on canon and sony reddit's, but with some different questions.
I know this has been asked many times, but I didn't really find an answer suitable for me.
I made a list about my pro's and con's of both cameras. (check the attached photo)
▪︎ So first of all, my main (pro) for the R8 is the 4k60 video, i need the 60fps smooth video for certain things, and if I want 60fps on the A7C, I need to record in 1080p (can't record in 1080p because I need to crop in the video, and you CAN'T crop a 1080p video).
▪︎ I really like the IBIS is the A7C, but is it that good for low light (I can use a slower ShutterSpeed)? Only thing I know its horrible for moving videos (for example vloging). But I heard you can disable it.
▪︎ Also I don't really care about R8's battery life.
▪︎ I already have 2 cameras that I am going to sell
-
A7i with 28-70mm (f/3.5-5.6)FF and an 55-210mm (crop-sensor lens)
-
Canon 250D with 18-55mm kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8
Now I am looking for an cheap wide angle for wloging - now I have my eyes on the CANON RF 16MM F2,8 STM for R8 or Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 for A7C. That when I will have the money I will by something like a 24-70mm (f/2.8)
So my questions are:
-
Is the rolling shutter that bad on the R8? I am definitely not doing bird photography or any sort of fast things.
-
Do I need the A7C IBIS? I will turn it off for videos if ill buy the A7C, but is it worth losing IBIS by buying the feature fuller R8?
-
Is the ES good in the R8 or you would prefer Gyrometric data like on the A7C?
-
I have an insane screen on my Samsung S24U and I would like to use it as a monitor. I heard that Canon isn't really as strong as Sony for supporting these kinds of things.
-
And do you have some other FullFrame camera suggestions for 1000€? (used camera)

Tough time deciding on which full-frame to upgrade and throw the most responsible amount of money into.
Going to keep it succinct and visual with my use cases, my non-negotiables, and my current biases and leanings
Reason for upgrade
Feeling bound by the low light and noise ability of APS-C, as well as fighting the crop factor of ultra-wide lenses.
I take pride in how much I can do with the star APS-C lenses, but having to shoot at 1600 or 3200 ISO on my R50 during a few-in-a-lifetime aurora chase and fighting the digital sky snow with every photo is discouraging me.
Use Case
Photography Primarily
-
Astrophotography- specifically Aurora Borealis chasing
-
Close product photography outside with natural backgrounds
-
Landscape
-
Family portraits
-
Most shoot with Standard Zoom and Ultra Wide, Telephoto takes a back seat.
Current system:
Camera: Canon R50
Lenses: Sigma 18-35 f1.8, Tokina 11-16 f2.8, EF-S 55-250
Non-Negotiables
-
Ultra Wide >=f1.8 Astro Lens for 1 second low noise astrophotography
-
Budget - I am Used or Refurbished Friendly where it makes sense
My Evaluation
The Pros and Cons are my personal subjective considerations about what features really matter to me.
Totally okay with the R8s compromises, but not sure i'm willing to cut A7Cii color improvement, AI, and 33MP benefit over A7C or A7iii.
Resolution is a nice-to-have, but feel 24MP is sufficient. Even IBIS is negotiable as the 24-70 has IS and 20mm will always be bright and tripoded.
Biases
Canon: I'm very biased to Canon and their out-of-camera colors. I can get away with a simple white-balance profile and export, couldn't be happier with Canon's vibrant look.
My workflow for social media is often exporting through the mobile app to lightroom mobile and happily posting it. I'm concerned about how much extra time and effort I would spend on color grading on desktop for Sony to look more like Canon
Sony: Sharp new third-party lenses. Aurora Astro is a niche demanding sharp wide open apertures where shutter speed also has to stay low. Most concerned about being locked into overpaying for heavy decade-old blurry EF Third Party lenses on Canon sacrificing image quality for the same level of investment.
Help Me Deliberate
Am I overblowing the color science difference? Sony A7C ii's form factor and promisingly better skin tones vs other A7's have me halfway, but side-by-side I can blindly prefer the Canon shot apart.
The wait for Third-party RF lenses is eternal and unpromising. Canon does not fill the Astro niche, but I'd be happily using the 24-70 95% of the time. Should a DSLR lens be a dealbreaker? Is there a fast Astro Lens adaptable for Canon that makes this whole system make sense inside the walled garden?
Thank you for caring, Photo Tax:

I have been using Canon 700D with (18-55mm and 50mm) since 2017 and now I want to upgrade to a full frame camera.
Scope of Use: I am passionate youtuber and want to pursue as my career in long run by making youtube videos, but I will be getting into interiors and real estate photography or into latch into any freelance work to fund my passion for YouTube.
I was convinced to purchase A7C but when I went to the store yesterday, the salesman introduced me to the Canon R8. On paper, Canon R8 has everything better than the A7C, except the battery life and IBIS. Also, I'm more familiar with the Canon interface and since R8 has full touch screen, I didn't find it hard to navigate through the camera. R8 is also cheaper than the 7C being it the newer model in the market and comes with 2 batteries on purchase.
Since, I'm more passionate about YouTube, I know that if I would want to upgrade to a newer body, I'd be more inclined towards the sony's cinema line of cameras. As someone said that, once you choose a body, you're also investing in the lenses you'll be buying for that camera and you can always upgrade the body with time but can't switch all the lenses, so lens are great investments. Although, Canon is now offering a mount that would allow third party lenses to be used with but I'm still confused because what even is a bigger upgrade in Canon bodies when it comes to videos. I can always upgrade the A7C body to A7Cii body after few years when it gets cheaper. Although I don't have any problem with the EVF of the A7C since I use my left eye for the view finder and it doesn't feel too small on my hands to grip on. I like the look and color (silver) on A7C more than the R8 but I'm more familiar with the Canon interface and since it's also fully touch screen, I wouldn't be worried too much to try learning something brand new, since I've heard it's hard to get through the Sony's system menu and try to understand it if you're a Canon user. Honestly I'm 50-50 on both and REALLY CONFUSED. Any suggestion from you users would be helpful to me.
I have the R8 and it’s a nice FF camera in the hand. If you can, hold one yourself and determine if it’s comfortable for you. I personally have found the R8 to be a pretty good camera, albeit with a battery which is a little poor for a camera for it’s calibre.
I would also recommend posting onto another subreddit which is less biased as most people on this subreddit are canon users, and cannot often show an unbiased view.
What is your budget? RF lenses tend to be costly, with L glass being expensive, Albeitly reliable and optically great to phenomenal (like the RF28-70 f/2)
Additionally, an EF to RF adapter would make the 50mm work on the R8.
What type of videos will you be making?
Ok.
My current Canon EOS M50 is starting to limit what I create. I'm using a strange setup with the Viltrox EF to EFM 0.71x speedbooster to get full frame FOV on this little APSC sensor, but with many draw-backs. When shooting outdoors, the max 1/4000ths shutter on the M50 sometimes isn't fast enough for correct exposure when using f2.8 and lower.
So; time to upgrade.
Budget: $1k USD, not flexible.
Country: USA.
Condition: I buy all my gear used or refurbished.
Type: Canon EOS R8 or Sony Alpha a7C.
Intended use: All genres of photography, I am a photo student at university. I also shoot video professionally.
I narrowed it down to these two because they're both full frame, mirrorless, have modern AF, can do at least 1080P 60, and have a max shutter of 1/8000ths of a second.
If you have any other suggestions please comment!
Canon EOS R8;
Pros -
I can use my current lens (Tamron EF 35-150 f2.8-4).
Most modern Canon AF suite.
Incredible video system from R6 II.
Cons -
RF mount. Expensive and limited selection of lenses.
Current EF lens would still need an adapter.
No IBIS.
Sony Alpha a7C;
Pros -
Styling points (personal preference).
Large selection of lenses, ranging in price and quality.
No extra adapters.
Build in IBIS.
Closer in form factor to my current M50.
Cons -
Need to relearn menu structure and terminology.
Age. Image and video quality falls behind R8.
Worse viewfinder.
Worse LCD.
Phew, feels nice to see it all laid out. I've only ever used Canon so far, so this would be quite the jump. Unfortunately I really though Canon would've opened the RF mount by now.
EDIT: Ordered the a7C!
Hello everyone! I'm about to go on a trip to Patagonia, and I'm preparing my equipment for the trip. I already have a drone with which I hope to take beautiful pictures, but I also want to travel with a handheld camera, since it's a beautiful trip and I want to capture every moment as best as possible. In addition to the drone (DJI mini 4 pro) I've been thinking of buying a Sony A7C, but a friend has highly recommended his Canon R8 (same price range). What do you think of these two cameras and which one would you go for if you were going on a trip? (The subject of lenses is a separate issue, but I'm thinking of going for a 24-105 probably.)
I'm quite undecided, so I really appreciate your opinion.

I'm looking to pick up photography as a hobby. I've been renting and using the Canon 200D for learning purposes. My friend, who is a wedding photographer, suggested some cameras. Is it better to buy any of these mentioned cameras during the learning stage? I have zero ideas about it. Can someone please help me out?
Budget: $1500–$2500 USD (including lens)
Country: USA
Condition: Open to new and used
Type of Camera:
Intended use: Hybrid shooting – both photography and video
If photography; what style: wedding/grad, travel, landscape, full body/portrait, instagram (bokeh would be nice)
If video what style: Performances (Dances), travel, YouTube, vlogging
What features do you absolutely need: Flip-out/articulating screen
Portability: travel-friendly — ideally fits in a small bag or around my shoulder without being bulky
Cameras you're considering:
Canon R8 + RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM
Sony A7C + Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2
Open to other suggestions
Cameras you already have: None
Notes:
I heard canon is well respected for their color science, but hard to tell if I'll like them since I'm assuming most content out there is edited.
I’m not familiar with color grading yet but happy to learn.
Thoughts on post production? In terms of
Ease of editing, Amount of editing, Are you able to get what you want?
I'm looking for hybrid camera that has room to grow my skills!
I have been looking at all the three cameras on the internet. While A6700 is crop sensor camera, it is a high-end crop sensor camera, whereas you can get an entry level full frame camera like R8 or Sony a7c for a little more. I want to hear your arguments for your choice.
I’m looking for a new camera and most probably it will be one of these three. I would go with one kit lens and in the beginning use older gen lens with adapter because they’re cheaper but still excellent. Opinions from users of these would be greatly appreciated.
Hi! I mainly do Landscape, Portrait, Urban and Street photography, but I sometimes do videography too. IBIS isn't really a problem for me because I've chosen on 24-105mm f4 for both sony and canon, which have IBIS in the lens. The needs for me is good color science, decent resolution and good sensitivity. Thanks!
If you shoot in JPG, color science could be important and Canon wins for large margin... Sony color science in JPG, well is not that great. Like mentioned, in RAW it won't matter that much.
Color science isn't a real need. You can edit the raw of file to get either look you want no matter the camera.
Since Sony just recently announced the Mark II of the their compact full frame, what are everyone’s thoughts on it compared to the R8 that was released earlier this year?
When I compared the two earlier this year, I went with the R8 based on specs, but now I’d think I would have gone with the R8 still based on price.
Hello,
I've quite literally potato'd my brain over deciding which of these two cameras I would like to buy given a number of circumstances, and I need your opinions on which I should go for!!
Firstly, I only begun looking into photography recently as I have discovered my parents do not use some old canon EF lenses (24-70 2.8L II USM, 24-105 4L IS, and 70-200 2.8L IS USM). This would save the money from buying lenses as they are in pretty good condition and from my research are good quality. My use case will be predominantly for hiking up mountains in all sorts of weather and taking landscape photography. I am not interested in fast paced photography.
This lead me to researching an ef-rf adapter for a R6 ii and using the lenses there. The R6 ii is an amazing option but quite expensive and a bit big/heavier than what I want to use it for. Naturally the R8 is a cheaper lighter option but I was not too sure on the lack of ibis (I think it's nice to have) and apparent poorer weather sealing.
Some more research lead me to discover Sony's range of cameras - particularly the a7c ii. I do love the small form factor it has even when compared to the R8, however for a couple hundred more you obtain more megapixels, IBIS and a smaller body! I really wish my parents went for Sony...
The only problem here is now having to use an adapter. After some research the sigma mc-11 adapter seems to do well for still photography, but is very poor for videography (which is a bummer but not essential). But it is not weather sealed!! Which turned me off from the option, and started looking the metabones V adapter which is weather proof and works better with canon. But this is almost 700 dollars..... At that point I could buy a second hand E mount lens for Sony.
Hence my ultimatum on what I should buy:
The R6 II for a objectively good camera but big body size and high price, or the R8 that seems like a cheap-out option when compared to I feel the objectively better a7c ii. (And with the addition of my canon lenses working well with an ef-rf adaptor)
The a7c ii that I truly think is all my desires in one camera and would love to go for, with an expensive adaptor (that doesn't have fully supported autofocus), or convert myself to the Sony eco system...
Help me choose and option please!!
EDIT:
So I ended up trying all three, and for starters IBIS is nice to have but no essential. For stills you won't really notice it and I don't think is worth the extra 1k. The other features of the R6 II I simply won't be taking advantage of that make the camera good. An R8 with lens stabilisation is more than enough for a steady picture. The a7c ii is a great camera and for the long term Sony provides a good future proof solution for a diversity of lenses, but I won't be able to use those my canon lenses on Sony and save money that way so canon R8 it is. Honestly if I had no lenses to begin with I would have gone with Sony though.
I was thinking of buying one of these but I can’t decide which one is better for hobby photography (night street travel photography). The A7C is more appealing because of the IBIS but there is also the A7C mark ii which looks better but is more expensive. Canon R8 is newer model and about the same price as A7C… which one do you think is better/more fun to use? Alternatively, should I wait for a drop in price to the A7C II?
You won't see any difference in image quality between A7C and A7C II. If choosing between the two, get A7C and spend the price difference on lenses, which are more important. As to A7C vs R8: either, whichever feels better in terms of ergonomics, controls and so on. This you need to verify at a store.
If possible check Lumix GX9 you will be happier

Sounds like use cases where pretty much any camera with good enough video features will do. Both of the cameras you have in mind are more than good enough.
I was convinced to purchase A7C but when I went to the store yesterday, the salesman introduced me to the Canon R8. On paper, Canon R8 has everything better than the A7C, except the battery life and IBIS.
Batterly life of R8 is surprisingly poor on paper, though typically the rated numbers are very conservative. But 150 shots using EVF is extremely low rated number. Poor battery performance may hamper video use more than still use as it is a more power hungry use case.
I'd pick the Sony for your use case simply due to this. Other than that the differences in performance are minor - the EVF of Sony is tiny though (and that Canon's EVF isn't breaking any size records eihter), but I imagine movie use is with the screen instead.
I think that A7C is the better pick from what you described. The small battery in the R8 is pretty prohibitive for video making.
If you were talking photos only, I personally would pick the R8.
• Budget: 1300
• Country: USA
• Condition:
• Type of Camera: Full Frame mirrorless
• Intended use: sports, street, travel (landscapes too)
• What features do you absolutely need: good af
• Portability: doesn’t necessarily need to be portable
• Cameras you're considering:canon r8c Sony a7c,
• Cameras you already have:fujifilmxt30 ii, canon rp
• Notes:all rounded camera , also need a lens but am currently looking at 24-70mm lenses to accompany the camera as it cover most of what I need
Which body do you think would work better with a 50mm f/1.8? I know that there are more lens options for Sony at the moment but i'm more interested in camera sensor and body features.
I have not yet found a scientific test on the sensor performance of either camera by an independent reviewer so far. I'll be leaning towards the A7C II given that it has IBIS.
At this point, Nikon, Canon, Sony, anything, at the high end it is pretty much the same.
What matters is what YOU like.
Do you prefer a more boxy body, like that of the Sony, or a more ergonomic model, like that of the Canon?
Which software do you prefer? You'll spend a lot of time looking at it, might as well have it be nice.
Which one has better features for you? Does Canon have an exclusive feature you want? Maybe Sony has some super cool thing you know you'd like? Perhaps Nikon does something you want very well?
It's all personal at this point, because the hardware has reached a point where a minor difference of 0.543% less noise and 0.12243% more image quality on one is not worth sacrificing on the happiness of actually using it.
Also, any familiarity is good. If you used a Canon DSLR in the past and liked it, pick that over the Sony, familiarity leads to a nicer user experience.
