haven’t seen brands matter here tbh, it’s more about the build + installation of the umbrella. still i’d say this sunnydaze one is somewhere between a regular cantilever and a sail so you wont have to move it around too much. just make sure to take into account the sun’s position/direction when setting up. side note: big fan of how the sun strikes the orange so it looks like a flame lol (feels like evolutionary instinct to find joy in a fire) More on reddit.com

Not a DIY question as such but don’t know where to ask so thought you all genius here:

Looking for recommendations on a cantilever umbrella for our outdoor dining area! We have a dining table outside, but there are tree branches hanging over the table. Trimming the branches too much isn’t an option, so I’m looking for an umbrella that would fit well in this space without causing issues.

I’ve been considering this Nouveau Cantilever Umbrella (3.5m Charcoal) from Mitre10 (pictured below), but I’m open to suggestions if you have experience with other options.

If you want an umbrella that lasts more than 2 years, get a shade 7. All the stuff that m10 and Bunnings sell is disposable and will NOT last. Mines 8 years old, still looks new, and I can leave it up in almost any weather. Cost me ~3k though. That said for your location I think a pergola/louvre system is a better choice.

I'm in the market for a cantilevered patio umbrella, and I've noticed that a lot of the middle-priced (~$400-600) umbrellas look suspiciously similar to the lower-priced (~$100-200) ones, sometimes to the point of being identical. My impression is that they're all made in the same factory in China and just get branded differently after import. The only ones that appear to be objectively better quality are in the $1,000+ range, which is more than I want to spend.

Does anyone have any experience with these umbrellas that suggests that the ~$500 ones are actually any better than the ~$100 ones?

I've found that the base is more important than the umbrella. I buy cheap umbrellas and spend my money on a good base.

I've used the $100-200 one for a couple years and works fine. But... Don't underestimate the importance of the base. Even the best umbrella will blow over/away without a heavy/wide base. The umbrella sees a ton of force in moderate wind. We have ours going through a picnic table into a granite base and a sandbag base on top. I drilled through the pole so the pin would have more strength and it wouldn't spin. We had a neighbor with an expensive umbrella but cheap base and it was destroyed in the first week. Before we got the picnic table we took it down after every use.
