Sadly yes. They did the same thing to me too. Capital One won't let you grow. After my bankruptcy I had the Capital One card for 10 years paying their annual fee. Unfortunately my own bank (RBC were equally hard on me.) Finally I reached out to BMO and they were really good to me. Now have a BMO credit card. I canceled my Capital One card. They helped me regain my credit rating but their strategy seems to keep people locked in. Seems kind of predatory to me. I would have thought they'd want to keep customer loyalty but they just didn't care. I also went right to their management several times. Pay it off and move on. It's truly possible. Good Luck! Yep. I was out of the country and came back with zero credit history. Use is pay it off in full monthly. Soon enough your bank will offer you a better card. When your bank offers a line of credit later on, take it. DO NOT USE IT! But Capital one if a good start. Doesn't work with Apple pay which is annoying though. More on reddit.com

It’s no different then any other credit card. Lenders know cap one offers secured credit cards, so if a credit decision is being made by a person reading your credit file, rather then a computer algorithm, a national banks credit card will be looked at more favourably due to their approval criteria. Try your own bank first, asking for a $500 limit, some major banks do offer a secured card. I recommend you book an appointment in branch to meet with an advisor, your initiative to build your credit may have them recommend an approval More on reddit.com

Honestly, if you have the BMO offer with $3,000 limit you are good to go. I have several low limit cards ($1,000 - $1,500) that I finally closed. All had annual fees, but I would negotiate getting them reduced every year. I thought I needed to keep them open to 'maintain' my credit, but learned the positive history stays on my report for 10 years. It sounds like Capital One is giving you one of their sub-prime products. More on reddit.com

I've had a gold mastercard from capital one for literally a year less 5 days so far (Jan 13 2024)
I want to switch to a card with no annual fee, and can't find any information on what capital one could do for me. I called and they don't allow product changes, and told me I need to close my account and apply for a new one after 30 days. They also said some people can have 2 cards, but refused to provide me with any information on the criteria for this.
Essentially they were not helpful at all. They've also kept my limit at $300 the whole time so far which i understand, cause I got the card right after bankruptcy. But the lack of customer support is crazy.
They kept referring to the online system, which is told them wasn't giving me any information either.
Anyone have experience?

I had their basic card for like 5+ years after a consumer proposal and it was at the core of rebuilding my credit - went from the initial $300 limit now to about $3000 - great product!
