Hi all,
I have a trip to Europe coming up and would like to have some cash in euros beforehand. I saw some people saying it’s a better exchange rate to go to a local atm at the destination to exchange, but I’ve always been told to always go to the bank to exchange.
Does anyone have advice?

I always use ATMs associated with a bank to access local currencies when I travel. Not the ATMs at the airport, and not in some business or on the street. Depending where you are the ATM might be built into a bank's exterior wall or in an entry. Choose to be charged in the local currency, if given the option. Use a debit card and check before you go if it has foreign transaction fees. Charles Schwab and Cap1 have checking accounts that reimburse any ATM fees.

Traveling to Europe for 3months and I leave beginning of April. How should I go about getting cash? I have a Capital One account, both debit and cc, and an Amex just cc. Trying to figure out the best exchange situation. I’ll use my Amex cc primarily but for small things and tips I think I will need a few hundred to a thousand euros. Is it better to exchange with a bank here in the US or in Europe? Is there even an atm for me in Europe? I’m starting in Lisbon, then on to Madrid, Barcelona, Cannes, Florence, Naples. That’s just my first 6 weeks. I’m north after that. Thanks for the help in advance!

Use your CapitalOne credit card for everything. It’s the absolute best exchange rate and it has no fees. Always select to pay in Euros. Never in dollars. The bank ATM is your best option for currency exchange. You normally won’t need much cash.

Just note that while AMEX is generally widely accepted, there may be locations where you can’t use it. Having a MasterCard or Visa Credit card is handy. Make sure you have no foreign transaction fees on your cards. You should be good to use your debit card at foreign ATMs to withdraw cash.

I was planning to make an online purchase from another country using my Venture X card. When I saw the converted amount in USD, it seemed a bit higher than expected based on the current exchange rate. Upon checking, I discovered that Capital One is charging a 6% currency conversion fee. I was under the impression that foreign transactions with VextureX didn’t have any fees.
Has anyone else experienced this, or am I missing something?

Where did you see the converted amount in USD? If you’re paying a in another currency you should not see the converted amount unless it’s in your statement. If the vendor site showed you a price in USD, they’re the ones with the fees (and it’s mostly a higher conversion rate.

When you make a purchase in a foreign country, always choose to pay in the local currency. When you do this, you will not pay any currency conversion fees. If you choose to pay in "USD" instead of local currency, then it is the vendor / vendor's payment processing platform that is charging you the fee. I just got back from 3 weeks abroad in multiple European countries, and the only times that I ended up paying more than expected were when vendors would sneakily choose currency conversion for me, rather than prompting me with the option to choose. This is commonly seen in small shops in tourist heavy areas. Sometimes it can't be avoided, and personally, it's not really worth the hassle of arguing over a few dollars at that point.
