If you travel a lot, consider switching to Charles Schwab bank. They refund all ATM fees worldwide, and their debit cards are Visa. It is so nice going to an ATM and not caring what fee I pay to withdraw money. More on reddit.com

The bad reviews are from people who have done something and don't ever want to tell the full story, they just want to make the bank look like the bad guy in every situation. I've been on and off banking with Capital One since 2016/2017 and haven't had any complaints. I got my first credit card with them too. The worst thing was that they placed that card in a bucket and it doesn't matter how much I spend it statement to statement it stays at 1250. But leaving them for a few years and not using the card, and going to a local credit union and building up my credit profile, I was able to apply for the Savor recently and get a 10k limit off the bat. Sometimes they are stingy, but sometimes they are awesome. Really just varies. I definitely love my Cashback setup with them, and I like having everything simplified as well. I've never had an issue with customer service, they've always been respectful, reasonable, and nice people. When I lived in the south it was even nicer to go in person. Now for me, they would be an online bank (as no locations are in my area or near me). More on reddit.com

Unpopular opinion: My husband works at Capital One and genuinely enjoys it—great team, supportive manager, and engaging work. Before this, he was at Wells Fargo, where he found the work dull and unchallenging. Yes, Capital One uses stack rankings, but if you perform well and have a good manager, it’s usually not a concern. Plus it's pretty common in big tech companies to see some form of stack rankings too. There are plenty of perks, and his team actively supports career growth—promotions have been much more attainable than at Wells Fargo. Of course, this is just our personal experience. Posting this in case my stupidity helps somebody…
I’m currently in Bangkok after arriving here a couple of days ago from the US. I use Capital One for my only checking account and planned to take out money here from ATMs as needed rather than traveling with a bunch of pristine USD and having to exchange it. My research showed that my debit card (a Mastercard at the time) would work without a problem so I thought I was good to go and mentally checked that off the planning list for the trip.
Well… Capital One sent me a new debit card about a week ago and I activated it and replaced the old one without really thinking about it, although they did mention it was changed to a discover card in the paperwork with the card I didn’t make the connection that discover is ass outside the US.
Cue several moments of panic as every ATM at BKK spit out my card with a vague connection error. I eventually made the connection that my new card was a discover network card and ended up heading to the Bangkok Bank branch at Central World to take out some THB using their ATMs which do take discover and took out what is hopefully enough for my whole trip as I’m unsure if I’ll be able to find another ATM in Koh Lanta and Chiang Mai. I do have a few Visa credit cards that I almost ended up using to cash advance but that costs an arm and a leg.
So if you just got a new capital one checking card - heads up that it’s a Discover and don’t rely on it when you head here!

This thread honestly saved us—can confirm that our Capital One Discover debit card worked at the Bangkok Bank ATM in Phuket! If you are by chance traveling to Cambodia, we could not find an ATM in Siem Reap that would take our debit card, including Acleda, even though it supposedly takes Discover, so be prepared for that. In Vietnam, BIDV takes Discover with no fee!
