Bought a "crate of car audio" on Craigslist for $100. I have some questions.
Any tips for buying subs and an amp from Craigslist? How do I evaluate the value, make sure I don't get ripped off, or even simply sort thru the dozens of posts? Is it even a good idea?
What's your location? My substage is currently on craigslist and if the gigantic Tline fits in the trunk, I'm sure we can come to an understanding. lol.
If not, then you just want to look for specific model numbers. If someone says "2 12s and a 1000 watt amp for sale" then ignore that guy. If someone says "Memphis MOJO 15 d2 and phoenix gold 2k for sale" that's the guy you want to talk to. Look up the price on the part numbers listed. Generally, audio equipment goes for half of what it is brand new - prefab boxes are worth 5-20 bucks, custom enclosures (especially nice ones that people originally paid ~$350 for) retain value fairly well.
First thing to do is get a budget together though.
More on reddit.comWondering if getting a pair of subs and an amp from Craigslist is a viable idea, and what I need to know if I try to do so. Can speakers be damaged apart from being audibly blown? If so what should I look out for? Should I categorically avoid any I can't listen to before purchase (ie not installed in a car currently)? How do I compare all the various brands, wattages, and sizes out there? Am I better off planning on spending X dollars and looking for components in that range, or should I pick out specs I'd like to have then look for parts that meet them at a reasonable price?
I'm not looking to have people hear me 3 miles before they see but I do want it to bump a little. There's just so many subs and amps for sale I don't know how to start comparing and shopping. Any advice is appreciated.

Search the specific model number on eBay. On the left hand side you can choose to only view items that have been sold. That way, you can see how much people actually paid for the item. Make sure to factor in the price of shipping too.
