I have a little bit of experience with this. Good Bluetooth adapters are going to cost something, mine was like $120 for a car 10 years newer. Even mine has bugs and doesn't correctly sync the track name or handle built in playback well. I think it's just the nature of aftermarket Bluetooth stuff, it's cheap and made by companies who don't fully test it or care. Here's my setup it helps any. I installed a MagSafe vent adapter so my phone sits where a normal car display would. Connects over Bluetooth when the car is started. My phone display is large enough that I control music directly from the phone instead of using the car audio buttons. Overall it works okay but no knobs or anything like you're after. Do you use Spotify? Spotify made a dedicated hardware player for cars about a year ago but deprecated it, maybe you could get one second hand if you could use it. Has a big dial and display, etc. If it comes to it maybe you can get a new head unit installed which could fix everything all at once for ya, but prolly more expensive than an Amazon adapter. Better than any short-range FM transmitter, you can get a hardwired Bluetooth FM modulator that plugs directly into the antenna port in the back of the radio head unit, then your stock antenna cable plugs into the modulator. The modulator picks up your Bluetooth and taps the output signal directly into the physical antenna circuit at one of (usually) two selectable frequencies on the radio dial; here's an eBay search for them . There's also similar, older-style FM modulators without Bluetooth, just an aux-in jack; these were commonly used to tap aftermarket CD changers into stock factory radios back in the day. IMO these would be preferable if your audio source (e.g. phone) has an aux-out/line-out or headphone jack. Anywhere you can eliminate a wireless signal in favor of a hardwired connection for audio, the better. Finally, if your stock head unit has a cassette player, there's also rechargeable dummy cassettes with Bluetooth built-in, so your phone would transmit a BT signal to the cassette adapter, which would then feed the audio signal right into the tape head just like playing a real cassette tape.
