CarGurus Used Car Price Index
Disclaimer: I drive a Ioniq 6, but cross-shopped with a Model 3 and Model Y last year. It's my first electric so today I was trying to do some research on how depreciation has treated me one year in. I came across CarGurus tracking used car values by brand. Curiosity got the better of me and I had a look at the road not taken. It's kind of wild. I wish I could compare to Hyundai but their prices as a brand are way lower and Ioniq isn't broken out as a sub brand. So instead I charted against BMW and Lexus because Tesla strikes me as being in a similar premium category. You can really see the price cuts and then the campaign/election effects. Wild stuff! CarGurus price history and what it means.
There's no satisfying answer to your question without having access to this dealer's DMS, but I can speak in broad generalities. The first thing is that markets change. I don't know what car this is but for the sake of argument let's call it an AWD SUV. In February, with snow on the ground, and 10 degree temperatures, it is worth more than it is in early spring, with birds chirping, green grass, and tulips popping up. That's just the seasonal market - there's also the just legitimate fact that cars generally depreciate and it is, factually, less valuable two months later. If the brand new ones are significantly upgraded that hurts it more. All that is to say that you wouldn't have necessarily been "overpaying" for the car two months ago - it would depend on how other, similar cars were priced. Secondly - and consumers always have trouble with this one - but a dealer making money doesn't mean you "lost" or "overpaid." Let's do a thought experiment. You're looking at a car and a fair price for it is $40,000. If the dealer got it for free - let's say their best customer died and left it to the dealer in their will - they'd still price it at $40,000. The fact that they're making $40,000 doesn't mean they'll take $20,000 for it - a fair price is $40,000. Similarly let's say the dealer took the car in on trade but someone screwed up. They appraised it as an SEL trim when it is an S trim and bought it for $45,000. That doesn't mean they will put it online for $50,000. They'll put it online for $40,000 and lose $5,000 selling it because $40,000 is the price it should sell for. Thirdly most dealership operate on a 90 day turn - meaning that a car stays in inventory for 90 days and then goes to auction. Typically a car is evaluated every week, 10 days, 2 weeks, and adjustments are made to the selling price if the market changes. Sometimes they're down, sometimes they're UP, but a car dealer is just a business - they price cars to market. Realistically we're right at the 90 day mark so they're probably listing the car for wholesale - meaning they are offering it for what they think it will go for at auction. This doesn't mean they're at cost, above cost, or below cost - since we don't have DMS access - it just means they're giving it one last shot to sell to a local retail customer where maybe they can pick up the service business, sell a warranty, etc. More on reddit.com

Sold to them , got paid via direct deposit, no issues at all. Was also somewhat skeptical at first, since they paid a price almost too good to be true More on reddit.com

What should I look for when buying a used car?

A great used car is one that's in good, safe condition and that fits your budget and your needs. Shoppers can help ensure the former by having potential purchases inspected by an independent mechanic, while the latter will depend on various details related to the buyer's finances and lifestyle. r/askcarsales on Reddit: CarGurus price history and what it means.
April 23, 2024 -

There is a car listed on CarGurus and the price history is as follows:

Current asking price: $42,990

4/22/2024: $45,390

3/15/2024: $45,990

2/28/2024: $46,990

Can I interpret this to mean that this dealer had at least 4K of "wiggle room" on the price back in February?

If I had gone to this dealer on 2/28/2024 and said: "I'll buy it today for $42,990." would I have been laughed at because my offer was thousands below the current ask?

If I had purchased this car on 2/28/2024 for $46,990, doesn't this prove I would have overpaid by $4K and so asking for thousands off the listed price of a used car is a legitimate request?

I mean fast-forward less than 2 months and here they are willing to sell it for 4K less.

This isn't an isolated case. I see this quite frequently.

Just curious as to what the thoughts are on this.

Edit to add: This is a used vehicle.

Not necessarily. Sometimes cars sit and get sold at a loss. In most instances we'd rather retail a unit with the hopes of capturing financing, etc. than wholesale it. It all depends though. There is no clear cut answer.
