Carhartt J131 - Duck Active Jacket - Thermal Lined | Dungarees
It’s perfect and not to long as I believe an extra large would have been. I’ve spent lots of time working in this style of carhartt jacked, because the thermal lining isn’t overly insulated I don’t over heat in this. This jacket is very comfortable and I find myself wearing it constantly.

r/Carhartt on Reddit: Active Jac Buying Guide
October 23, 2022 -

Looking to purchase a carhartt active jacket as I hear they're quite durable, warm, and with time and wear fade to have a very distinct and unique comfort/look.

Considering either the washed duck flannel variation in a coffee color off of Carhartt's website or a discontinued sandstone duck variation in brown that I've seen on amazon. I'd go with the sandstone version in a heartbeat apart from the fact that the sellers are charging an extra ninety bucks which is completely absurd.

Curious on peoples opinions about these newer firm duck variations, and to be completely clear I'm considering purchasing the J140 not the 104050 whose cuffs, pockets, and lining I despise. I know the sandstone is supposed to be softer but I figure I'd wash the jacket a few times before wearing it with a little vinegar or beat it with a mallet or something. What I'm really curious about is the durability of the jacket, if there is any difference between this style and the sandstone variant, as well as whether one is noticeably warmer than the other.

I hear a lot of complaints regarding the newer carhartt stuff being somewhat shite and I'm not interested in blowing 110$ on a jacket of inferior quality. I would MAYBE be willing to splurge a little big if the difference was that significant, but even if y'all proclaim it's worth it i might just continue to sport the Dri Duck coat I have now.

Admittedly I'm not in a blue collar profession. I do manual labor around the house ranging from petty yardwork to carpentry and some finer carpentry projects, but I generally just like workwear as it affords me the relief that the article of clothing I buy today will probably still be in my closet ten years from now and will look even better as said years go on. The J140 stylistically, like it or not, is probably as good as a workwear jacket gets, so it makes sense so many hipsters are buying these en masse.

One last thing. Say it's still a decently durable and warm jacket--what do you reckon I should go for in terms of sizing? I'd like to layer with a hoodie and perhaps a long sleeve and undershirt during the coldest months (Chicagoland area btw), and I'm 5'11 150 lbs. I'm thinking medium, but I worry about how much the article will shrink with each wash. I've also heard that larges fit like double XLs in the chest even on people that are around 6'2. Medium tall, perhaps?

It sounds like you are wanting to purchase either the J140 Quilted Flannel-Lined Firm Duck Active Jacket in the "Coffee" color or the J130 Quilted Flannel-Lined Sandstone Duck Active Jacket in the "Carhartt Brown" color and are definitely not considering the 104050 Thinsulate-Lined Washed Duck Active Jacket. I've owned several of each of those three jackets so I have some experience with them. I am actually working on an Active Jacket guide but haven't posted it yet. Similarities Both the J130 and J140 are Active Jackets that have the same polyester quilted flannel lining, elastic rib knit cuffs and waistband, adjustable hood with drawstrings, interior left-side hook-and-loop pocket, interior, right-side zip pocket and two large front hand-warmer pockets. I do not notice a difference of warmth from the J130 to the J140. There might be a very minimal difference due to the sanded duck of the J130 but it's nearly insignificant. The durability is also very similar, though being prewashed and sanded does make the J130 perhaps slightly less durable, but once again, not by much. After several washings, the J140 will begin to appear and feel like a new J130 anyway. Differences The J130 and J140 are nearly identical aside from the shell material, country of original and the fit (more on that in the "Sizing" section below). Firm Duck is unwashed duck and the most rigid of the eight Duck types. It's also treated with water-repellant but after a few washes it needs to be re-treated. Sandstone Duck is washed and sanded to give it the "broken in" feel and appearance. It will be softer and less stiff and it is not treated with water repellant. Most J140s are made in the USA (as of 2016 they are made in the USA of US and imported parts) though you may find some from the late 2000s that were made in Mexico. The J130 was only ever made in Mexico. There is not a difference in quality despite what some may lead you to believe. Like most Sandstone styles, the J130 was available in over 20 different colors while the J140 was available in 9. Sizing My height isn't that important because people have different bodily proportions and preferences, but I will mention it anyway to give an idea but take it with a grain of salt. I am 6'2" and I wear own both Medium Regular and Medium Tall in the J130 and J140. I prefer the Medium Tall in the J130 mainly due to the extra sleeve length. Most Medium Regular J130s (and Sandstone Medium Regular styles in general) are about an inch or two shorter than I'd like. I sometimes wear the Medium Regular but when I am really moving or working, the extra length is a blessing so the sleeve doesn't ride up. With the Medium Regular/Medium Tall, I can still fit a hoodie underneath without it being too snug. It's worth noting that the unwashed J140 fits about an inch longer in the sleeve and body length than the washed J130. Because of the extra length, it's less important for me to get a J140 in Medium Tall than it is to get a J130 in Medium Tall. The J140 is unwashed so it will eventually shrink a little bit closer to the J130. Shrinking won't be excessive provided you follow the care instructions but I would go a step further and wash cold and air dry if you can. This serves a dual purpose to minimize shrinkage and wear-and-tear. I also would try to wash as infrequently as possible and when you do wash, zip it completely so the zipper isn't slapping around the machine. Here are some approximates that you can use to choose the correct size: J130 Small | Medium | Large | Chest | 24" | 26" | 28" | Length | 27" | 29" | 29" | Shoulder | 20" | 21" | 22" | Sleeve | 25" | 25.5" | 26" Tall sizes (MT-4XLT) are 2" longer in sleeve and body length. J140 Small | Medium | Large | Chest | 24" | 26" | 28" | Length | 28" | 29" | 29" | Shoulder | 20" | 21" | 22" | Sleeve | 26" | 26.5" | 27" Tall sizes (MT-4XLT) are 2" longer in sleeve and body length.

I have both in size medium, for reference I'm 5'9 182 pounds. The j140 shrunk after the first wash as it's 100 percent cotton, Length was just long enough. No room to later underneath but I work indoors so it's fine. The j130 didn't shrink at all and is a mile long, it comes down to my thighs and sleeves are a couple inches too long. Body fit good with room to layer but I wish it was shorter. I'm thinking I could fit a small. I ended up selling it due to the length but if you work in the cold this is a good thing. I'm thinking about getting another one and selling the j140 as it is pretty stiff, even after a few washes. Great for wind protection if you work outdoors but I like the washed duck of the j130 much better. I hope this helps

It is 5x more durable than Carhartt's traditional cotton duck. Cordura® nylon is a very rigid fabric built to fight the wear and tear present in extreme conditions. Carhartt's classic firm duck, as found on the Carhartt J140, is made from untreated cotton duck.

Great jacket. Super warm. Wore it while on vacation in NYC. Walking for hours in 20-30 degree weather with a sweater under and was warm. Some points even having to unzip the jacket to cool off a little. Durable material. Didn't worry about it ripping while traveling.
