Active Jac Buying Guide
It sounds like you are wanting to purchase either the J140 Quilted Flannel-Lined Firm Duck Active Jacket in the "Coffee" color or the J130 Quilted Flannel-Lined Sandstone Duck Active Jacket in the "Carhartt Brown" color and are definitely not considering the 104050 Thinsulate-Lined Washed Duck Active Jacket. I've owned several of each of those three jackets so I have some experience with them. I am actually working on an Active Jacket guide but haven't posted it yet. Similarities Both the J130 and J140 are Active Jackets that have the same polyester quilted flannel lining, elastic rib knit cuffs and waistband, adjustable hood with drawstrings, interior left-side hook-and-loop pocket, interior, right-side zip pocket and two large front hand-warmer pockets. I do not notice a difference of warmth from the J130 to the J140. There might be a very minimal difference due to the sanded duck of the J130 but it's nearly insignificant. The durability is also very similar, though being prewashed and sanded does make the J130 perhaps slightly less durable, but once again, not by much. After several washings, the J140 will begin to appear and feel like a new J130 anyway. Differences The J130 and J140 are nearly identical aside from the shell material, country of original and the fit (more on that in the "Sizing" section below). Firm Duck is unwashed duck and the most rigid of the eight Duck types. It's also treated with water-repellant but after a few washes it needs to be re-treated. Sandstone Duck is washed and sanded to give it the "broken in" feel and appearance. It will be softer and less stiff and it is not treated with water repellant. Most J140s are made in the USA (as of 2016 they are made in the USA of US and imported parts) though you may find some from the late 2000s that were made in Mexico. The J130 was only ever made in Mexico. There is not a difference in quality despite what some may lead you to believe. Like most Sandstone styles, the J130 was available in over 20 different colors while the J140 was available in 9. Sizing My height isn't that important because people have different bodily proportions and preferences, but I will mention it anyway to give an idea but take it with a grain of salt. I am 6'2" and I wear own both Medium Regular and Medium Tall in the J130 and J140. I prefer the Medium Tall in the J130 mainly due to the extra sleeve length. Most Medium Regular J130s (and Sandstone Medium Regular styles in general) are about an inch or two shorter than I'd like. I sometimes wear the Medium Regular but when I am really moving or working, the extra length is a blessing so the sleeve doesn't ride up. With the Medium Regular/Medium Tall, I can still fit a hoodie underneath without it being too snug. It's worth noting that the unwashed J140 fits about an inch longer in the sleeve and body length than the washed J130. Because of the extra length, it's less important for me to get a J140 in Medium Tall than it is to get a J130 in Medium Tall. The J140 is unwashed so it will eventually shrink a little bit closer to the J130. Shrinking won't be excessive provided you follow the care instructions but I would go a step further and wash cold and air dry if you can. This serves a dual purpose to minimize shrinkage and wear-and-tear. I also would try to wash as infrequently as possible and when you do wash, zip it completely so the zipper isn't slapping around the machine. Here are some approximates that you can use to choose the correct size: J130 Small | Medium | Large | Chest | 24" | 26" | 28" | Length | 27" | 29" | 29" | Shoulder | 20" | 21" | 22" | Sleeve | 25" | 25.5" | 26" Tall sizes (MT-4XLT) are 2" longer in sleeve and body length. J140 Small | Medium | Large | Chest | 24" | 26" | 28" | Length | 28" | 29" | 29" | Shoulder | 20" | 21" | 22" | Sleeve | 26" | 26.5" | 27" Tall sizes (MT-4XLT) are 2" longer in sleeve and body length. New pickup 🔥 I love the thermal lined active jackets(forest green???)
Hi, the color is just "Green". It's a JR104 / J03 GRN Thermal-Lined Firm Duck Active Jacket from 1994-1998. "J" stood for "Jacket", "R" for "Thermal" and "4" was the early color code for "Green." The Tall version had a slightly different code, JR114. Carhartt began to simplify their code system in the late 1990s so the JR104/JR114 became the J03 GRN where "J" stood for "Jacket", "3" because it was the third jacket style to be assigned a code in the new format and "GRN" was the new color code for "Green." To make the transition to the new code easier, jackets produced in late 1997-1999 had both the old and new codes printed on the tags. By 2000, the old code was officially dropped. In 2002, the J03 GRN was replaced with the J131 GRN. It had a wider and longer fit, smaller outer logo patch, a three-piece instead of two-piece hood with different drawstrings and two inside pockets. The J131 was discontinued in "Green" a few years later but was made in other colors until last Fall/Winter. More on reddit.com
ID on hooded jacket? (also trying to figure out size, the regular non-tall jackets fit me best, no tag and seller says pit to pit length is 26 in. and vertical length is 27 in.)
It's a JR105/J03 BLK Thermal-Lined Firm Duck Active Jacket in the "Black” (BLK) color manufactured in the range of 1994-1999 with the outer logo patch removed. “JR105” was the original style code where “J” stood for “Jacket”, “R” for “Thermal” and “5” was the early color code for “Black.” The Tall version of this jacket was the JR115 . The JR105/JR115 was produced from the 1980s until 1998, at which point Carhartt began to simplify their style/color code system so its style/color code was changed to “J03 BLK" where "J" stood for "Jacket", "03" because it was the third jacket to be assigned a new code and "BLK" was the new color code for "Black." To make the transition to the new code format easier, Carhartt began printing the old code (JR105 or JR115) and new code (J03 BLK) on the tags of jackets produced as early as late 1997. In 2000, the old codes were officially dropped and only the new code (J03 BLK) was displayed on the tags. The J03 was discontinued in 2003 and replaced with the J131 , which had two inside pockets, a three-piece instead of two-piece hood with updated drawstrings, an internal instead of external hanging loop and a slightly wider and longer fit. Carhartt just recently discontinued the J131 last Fall/Winter. In regards to the sizing, many sellers don't measure correctly, especially the pit to pit. They don't flatten the jacket completely so the measurement they state is less than reality. If measured correctly like this (example is a J06 HTG Medium Tall), a Medium JR106/J03 BLK is about 24" from pit to pit, 26.5" from back neck seam to the end of the waistband, 20" from shoulder seam to shoulder seam and 26" from outer shoulder seam to the end of the cuff. Size Large is about 26" from pit to pit, 21" from shoulder to shoulder, 26.5" in outer sleeve length and 26.5" inches in back length. Size XL is about 28" from pit to pit, 22" from shoulder to shoulder, 27" in outer sleeve length and 27" inches in back length. My best guess is the one you referred to is an XL with an incorrectly measured pit to pit width. More on reddit.com
New Cahartt user looking for an opinion to which jacket to use while travelling for work
J140 is firm duck -its gonna be stiff ( esp if you arent used to heavy/thick work wear jackets. -J133 is cordura shell> has significantly more water resistance However mine is super ultra stiff. The hood still 3/4 stands up on its own> doesnt lay flat. And the fabric makes loud “shoosing” noises when moving. For work in light rain— its amazing. Would I use mine in your situation? Never.
