I’ve actually played with this dye before! It makes really lovely shades of red and pink on fabrics. And yeah, it’s bugs but it is very safe. Here is some more info about it. If you still think bugs are bad, go look into arsenic green or how terrible cheap synthetic dyes were, and sometimes still are. More on reddit.com

Not too sure what I think about this Carmine red Panamera with paint matched wheels
The red itself is gorgeous, but the wheels seem a little overkill. Black rims would be much better imo.

Brilliantly Red: The Structure of Carmine | Crystal Growth & Design
Several models of carmine have been proposed, with previous investigations hinting at a tetranuclear structure containing four carminic acid molecules and some oxygen species, as well as calcium and aluminum cations, in a proposed ratio of 2:1:1 between carminic acid, calcium, and aluminum. (10,13) Notably, evidence suggests that particularly bright-red ‘crimson lake’ is only obtained when both calcium and aluminum ions are present, while purple hues are obtained using alternative preparation methods lacking calcium. (15) Such an effect has also been observed for madder lake pigments, in which cation identities have been observed to influence the color of the pigment by modifying the charge distribution within the complex.
