Selling a car [-] cars.com or autotrader.com
Personally I'd prefer Facebook ... than my ideal values of Facebook taking over yet another aspect of bringing humans "together". If you just want it gone: Most charities are setup to come pick up your vehicle and take it away for a tax credit. They are usually quite speedy. If you want money instead: Carmax, Carvana, etc will just buy it outright with very little hassle near instantly. If you want to try and maximize the sale price you have to list it and sell it ... Has anyone been able to successfully list their cars on cars.com? It seems they intentionally block out private sellers from listing in favor of dealers.

Where to find used cars, for sale; by normal people?

All the same places you’re looking now basically, you just gotta wade through the crap to find the descriptions that aren’t just copypasta or one liners. Seriously I’m never buying a car from a guy who thought it wasn’t worth spending more than 30 secs trying to sell it

Oh and local print publications are good as typically the only people using them are older generations and people trying to scam older generations, the later being easier to spot if you don’t fit into the category of the former.

I must say though, it certainly feels to me that less people than ever before are selling their cars privately - it seems more and more people don’t care about getting a crap value for it if they don’t have to deal with selling it.

How does title and registration work when selling my car to a dealer?
The vehicle will need to have a current valid tag and any state taxes that are due will need to be paid. These would be registration fees and taxes, not sales taxes. However, if the car is a lease in most states sales taxes on the leased car will need to be paid by the customer.

March 1, 2024 -

Recently, I've been trying to sell my car. I create an account with cars.com and submit my listing. I receive a confirmation saying it will be published within 24 hours. After days of silence, I try to login and even login doesn't work. I repeat this process one more time and same thing happens. I contact their support and after an hour they say they need a copy of the title while they already know it's a financed car. My conclusion is that this is intentional so that private sellers lose time and be forced to sell to dealers at a lower price. In my case, I lost weeks trying to list my car. They never contacted me for additional documents and when I contacted them, they ask for a document they know I don't have. They also silently killed my account so I cannot login and follow up. What has America become? Am I missing something?

April 20, 2025 - Sold my old 2005 Saturn L300 on autotrader.com for $1500. Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp were nothing but lowball offers (which I can't completely fault them for because it did need some work). Got the much better price on AutoTrader PSX and the process is quite intricate as to protect both buyer and seller. Transaction ran long due to the escrow nature of PSX (and the fact this car was being shipped to another city) but them acting as middle man took care of all the paperwork and minimized liabilities.
