I thought it was well crafted, though not well researched, or sourced. There were a few details that were off. Even Vanity Fair falters by not fact checking. Cary Grant wasn't cockney, so he never spoke in his 'native cockney' as the writer suggests. He was from Bristol, so any accent used in film, was an affectation for that character. Scotty Bowers didn't hit Hollywood until 1946, well after the two men had broken up. He was born in 1923, and in 1939 when they broke up, would have been 16. In 1942, when he was 19, Bowers then went to fight in WWII from Illinois. By this time, Grant and Randolph had moved on. Scott married Patricia Stillman in 1944 and adopted 2 kids. Grant would go onto 3 more marriages (Barbara Hutton in 1942, Betsy Drake, and then Dyan Cannon) and have 1 kid. Scott's career did not flatline. He went onto make many many westerns for a niche audience. (Though from the 1940's through the 70's, westerns were mainstream). He not only produced, he starred and directed them. The writer never picks up that Fred Astaire would remain friends with both Grant and Scott. There are references to him in both CH Scott and Jennifer Grant's tributes to their fathers. Scott and Astaire would go to Dodger games. Grant was a huge Dodger fan. Is it hard to imagine they wouldn't they see each other in passing? No. However, Astaire's own biography will go unknown for many more years, as he married a much younger woman, doesn't share any papers or film footage. The writer never references that both Scott's Son, CH Scott, and Grant's daughter, Jennifer Grant, would go on to write affectionate books* about their fathers. According to both, their Dads were exemplary fathers, and by that time, neither ever had any inkling that their fathers' had relationships with men. Scott died one of the richest men in Hollywood, with investments and real estate still married to Patricia. None of their children were in a position to comment what happened in the 1920's or 30's. Neither father spoke of it, and denied anything had gone on. They could only write about their own experiences, which were good. But I think just looking at the photos, and reading the thinly veiled articles of the era, it's not hard to imagine these two beautiful men as a pair. In the photos, there is affection and joy between the two men. Whatever happened before1939 was tossed aside due to studio pressures and societal attitudes. It is sad that such attitudes resulted in straight washing.
