A foundation (or box spring) provides support to the mattress so that it doesn't sag. Box springs are common when you have a bed frame that's just a metal frame that doesn't have support in it. If you have a solid or slatted foundation (slats only a couple of inches apart at most, I believe) then you don't need a box spring, unless the mattress company says you need it for your warranty. Basically, you need something- slats, a solid foundation on your bed frame, or a box spring so that the mattress has solid support throughout the whole thing so the mattress doesn't start to sag. If you want to stay on a budget you could get a platform bed frame from KD frames . They have proper slat spacing to support your mattress without the need for a separate foundation. If you do go with a frame and foundation combo just make sure the foundation you get is properly supportive with the slats spaced 3" or less apart. The term box spring is used to mean just about anything these days, but you wouldnt want to use an actual box spring as they are really a thing of the past. Modern mattresses need a solid foundation whether its a foam mattress or pocketed coils. More on reddit.com

I bought a Casper Original and my existing IKEA Hemnes bed.
Casper said to replace my box springs with slats (or their expensive foundation). I tried the inexpensive Luroy slats, And I feel like it’s higher/supportive in the middle where the mid beam is and it feels like it sags on either side.
I’m guessing it’s the slats, but I’m struggling on what’s the best cost effective solution
Flat slats ? Piece of plywood on top of the slats ? $400 Casper foundation Bunkie board on top of slats ?
Any suggestions?

I purchased 12 1x4 boards from Home Depot as “flat slat” supports for my Casper mattress This fixed the issue with the sinking. When I was swapping the slats out I noticed how easily the old ones could curve inward so it makes sense Only comment , I’m kind of shocked at how much more firm the mattress is on these flat slats. Like not a little bit , like now the mattress feels like a rock. My wife likes it so I’m going to keep giving it a try, Just wonder if anyone has had a similar experience with slats like this

I believe you either place the mattress on top of the foundation or if you have a bedframe it would go in the bedframe on top of the wooden slats.
