Based on the general consensus I’ve seen on this sub, we should avoid “bed-in-the-box” type products, and spend more to invest in a quality mattress. That being said…
We’re looking to buy a mattress for our guest bedroom. We’d rather avoid spending too much. If we were to invest in more expensive options, we’d just buy a king-size tempur-pedic for ourselves and put our current queen size tempur-pedic in the guest room. We were looking at the Casper because it’s affordable, but it seems most people didn’t love it as their daily driver. Would a mattress topper have solved issues, or do we really need to spend THAT much to get a quality mattress for a guest that I might sleep on a couple of night’s per week?
For reference: I’m about 200 lbs, sleep on side and back. My wife is also a combination sleeper. Trying to keep it around 500 for a budget mattress.
What would you do in my situation? Any better budget suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I have an original Casper from 2015. It’s not nearly as comfortable as it used to be and I think I need more support as I get older. I have lots of pressure points on my back and shoulder. I posted earlier about nice pillows improving things some, but I’m still stuck on the actual mattress.
I originally came to this sub hoping to confirm my plans to buy a Tempur Proadapt hybrid soon, but now I’m not sure what I want or what will work. I don’t feel certain I’ll choose something that makes it better that’s worth the price. So I’m wondering people’s thoughts and experiences on using toppers for a Casper. Will it buy me some time and improve things or no without something quality to rest on? Can cheaper memory foam be improved? Would latex help?
75% side sleeper, 25% back 190 lbs Queen bed Super sturdy metal slat frame Don’t really sleep hot
Thank you!

I bought a quite expensive mattress that on the store floor felt incredibly comfortable (memory foam top with inner spring, so a hybrid). However, after taking it home, it never broke in the same as the store model (talking like six months of constant use), and remained way too firm for me.
I've fussed around with mattress toppers but ended up being disappointed in all of them. I thought maybe it'd be worth it to ask somewhere for advice before I go buying yet another topper; I do not have the money that is required to get a whole new mattress, and spending on toppers is a headache too. But I really need to figure this out, since I just gave up on my latest topper, and being back on the mattress directly is cutting down on my sleep tremendously.
Information; I am stuck side sleeping and have fibromyalgia/a lot ofchronic pain and an unstable pelvis plus SI joint problems (most of my sleeping pain comes from my hips and lower back). I am very happy with my pillow situation and the top half of my body is supported by that. My mattress itself is in working condition, albeit too firm for me, and my bed frame is metal slatted.
The mattress toppers I have tried are egg carton which ended up breaking down pretty quickly and becoming too soft, a generic two inch memory foam which didn't seem to make much difference, and then I switched to an all latex which worked for a while and then didn't... it's hard to describe but it got too sinky in a way that felt it was worsening my hip alignment and a weird push back sensation or something. Plus it slid EVERY night unlike the first two, to the point it was a huge headache. I am considering just getting one of those feather like duvet covers and seeing if that is enough but I don't know if that's the right call.
Any thoughts would be super appreciated, by my back and my wallet! Thanks so much
We read good reviews about Casper and after trying Purple 3 and returning it, we thought we'd give Casper a try. I was expecting something very comfortable, but to be honest if I lay in this bed without knowing what it is I would think it's just some cheap spring mattress. We have the original Casper hybrid. We definitely thought it would be slightly softer as reviewers online say it's on the softer side of medium. We are on day 3 and it has caused back pain each night. Our old bed is a Tempur Pedic, which we have in the guest room now as it is a Cal King and we want something wider. I think we will just have to bite the bullet and spend the money to get another Tempur Pedic.
The other option we are considering is a Tempur Pedic mattress topper we found for $279 and just throwing that on top and saving the money. Has anyone tried their topper?
I have a wave and it feels like sleeping on a cheap Piece of hot garbage. Numb arms. How is this company still around?
Yes, I bought a 3” wool topper topper to soften and provide some airflow. It’s just a temporary solution. we are currently looking for a better bed.
I have the tempur pedic topper that Costco sells (or used to sell, anyway.)
In the end, it helped soften my brand new bed enough that I got through the break in period, but it didn't feel like the tempur pedic mattress I had before. I had one of the old ones- the brown slabs of foam they sold on infomercials with a lady jumping next to a wine glass. The topper helped a little, but it certainly didn't mimic the overall experience of a TP mattress.
I'm not sure that's really helpful to you, but if you can find one at Costco (or their website) that works for your bed, it does always have a return option.
Good luck.
I have a Casper Original Hybrid and need a recommendation for a topper. Currently the bed is too firm for side sleeping but ok for back sleeping. I’ve tried a few options;
-
Zinus 1.5” foam topper: too soft for both positions but especially back sleeping and very hot.
-
Newentor dual topper: Medium and soft, had it on the soft side but made my bed firmer.
-
Casper topper: Also made my bed feel firmer.
Now I’m using the Endy topper with a thick quilted pad on top and a square of memory .75” foam in my shoulder area. The Endy topper on the soft side feels basically the same as my mattress so I may return it and go back to just the thick quilted topper which is still not enough. Any suggestions as to what I could try? I was thinking maybe just a 1” piece of foam could do it but I’m not sure.
Female, 5’4 and 143lbs, back and side sleeper. I can’t stick to one position. I’m mainly having issues with it being too firm for my shoulders.
Hi! My partner and I have been sleeping on a Casper mattress for the last year and it has completely wrecked my back. Ive developed the worst chronic back pain in my life over the last year and have spent money on physical therapy, fitness trainers, ergonomic desk set ups, everything— still no amount of moment, daily stretching, etc could fend off the pain.
Im at my family’s for the holidays and I slept on a spring mattress (I slept on spring mattresses my entire life before the Casper) and in less than a week of sleep, it feels like my year long back pain has almost entirely disappeared.
Initial perusing of this sub tells me that firm toppers don't work, but I don’t think I can afford a new mattress right now and I think I might literally break down and cry if I have to go back to sleeping on the Casper. Like, I'd rather sleep on an air mattress at this point.
Does anyone have any recs for a firm mattress topper or some other solution that I can use upon returning home to my Casper mattress while I save for a new mattress?
TLDR; developed chronic back pain after sleeping on a Casper mattress for one year. Slept on a spring mattress for one week and the pain entirely disappeared. Cant afford a new mattress so looking for firm foam mattress topper recs or other solutions.
I'm debating these options and am curious if anyone has an opinion: 200 lb female, wide hips, side sleeper---too firm mattresses can cause hip and shoulder pain, but I sleep hot with memory foam (have recently realized my 4" memory foam topper is making me miserable with heat and removed it from my Casper Select 12" Memory Foam Medium-Firm Mattress, but now it's a bit too firm.) ANYWAY, the new mattress is for a different room (remodeling has me sleeping in the guest room).
Option 1: Spindle Mattress, I have a call scheduled with them Mon to determine the firmness of the layers in case this is the way I go. The appeal of this one is that it's all encased in a cover but can be customized at home without returning (wow!, yay!). I hate it when the top layer is sliding around and I have to fidget with it. This option is advertised as $1,899.99 currently. It's 10" which is a bit scant for all my extra deep linen sheets. This mattress appeals to me though because you can switch around the layers or (I guess) even add other ones and theoretically, it should last a very long time (or even forever???).
Option 2: Casper Select Memory Foam King Mattress (because I like the other one I have except for the slightly too firm aspect) ($769.99 at Costco) + Pure Green Natural Latex Mattress Topper w/Cover - Soft - 3 Inch ($410.00) + Zip up mattress cover (to hopefully keep the stack in place) $45, total $1224.99 ($675 less than the Spindle option). This mattress appeals to me because it's less $ but seems to have most of the same benefits. I can't see how the memory foam base affects the heat with the topper on, and I've had the other Casper Mattress of this model for 3 years and it looks and feels like the day I got it, so it seems pretty durable. With the topper, this option would be 15" which looks better to me aesthetically and makes the sheets fit better. Theoretically, the Casper will break down eventually (dip/degrade) but the latex layer could be reused, so this isn't as durable/permanent a solution I suppose? (Landfill waste doesn't fill me with joy.)
Thanks in advance for your advice/opinions!
We went with Spindle for the same reasons you cite. We actually bought two. A king: fms and Queen: fmm. I'm 200 lbs 5 10, wife 145 5 8. At first the fmm seemed too firm but after a month or so it's fine. For a while we used a cotton pad above a soft bamboo protector. The fms is slightly less firm. No regrets with either. Spindle was very good to deal with.
I love my Casper. It’s a step up for my body and mind after waking up. I got the Nova Hybrid and have been enjoying it a ton. Also, no restocking fees/in store credit during the 100 night trial since it gets picked up by a donation center if you don’t like it. Full refund. It’s also just a fun store if you can go in person!
I bought a Casper original and am having regrets after laying on an L class…also really liked the silver pine extra 14 soft Eurotop. Is there any hope of transformation with this original? What topper should I look at if so?
Unfortunately it's not that simple, you can't duplicate a mattress feel by simply adding a topper to an existing mattress which is a completely different design. The feel of a mattress is affected by each of its layers and how they work in relation to each other. Sorry, I know that's not the answer you were hoping to get but I'm just trying to be realistic. You can generally soften a given mattress with a softer topper of either memory foam or latex depending on your preference, but it can't make a change in the lower support layers.
That's doable when you start from a similar base, but the Casper is a completely different support system as Bill noted. That is a tall order.
I’ve had my Casper original for 6 years and it’s just the worst. My partner and I are both sore and have terrible sleeps cause it’s so firm.
We are both around 145-160lbs. Primarily side sleepers that dabble in back sleeping. Im an hourglass shape so my shoulders and hips hurt every night. Budget is flexible but probably no more than $2000CAD (around $1500USD). I never was a hot sleeper till I got this Casper and now it’s stained and all my sheets are stained because of how much it makes me sweat so I’d love to avoid the memory foam situation.
Any help is much appreciated, I’ve been searching forever. I’m literally posting this at 4am and about to move to the couch again.
What have you tried in person? Do you prefer memory foam, polyfoam, serene foam or latex?
Coils or all foam mattress?
You might try putting a soft topper on your current. If nothing else, toppers are a cheaper way to try some stuff out. I’d try either 2” soft latex or 2” of serene foam. Latex breathes better, and serene foam is pretty good as well.
So I have a unexpectedly firm bed (Queen size Sealy Response Essentials Maplewood 8.5" Firm) and Im looking at two toppers in specific. My SO is a hot sleeper so cooling would be a plus and I miss some of the sink in feel of foam but do like the better support at the same time that having a firm bed offers so I think getting some kind of foam or gel topper would be good
I've been looking at The Casper Mattress Topper and Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper which ironically both cost more than the mattress itself. I got the mattress in early September of this year on a sale Mattress Firm had, so which of those two toppers would be better
or is there another one that's even better or a better value?
TL;DR
my SO is a hot sleeper, and I find my bed a little too firm so would a Casper Mattress Topper or Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper be better or is there something else that's better or better value and just as good?
Latex. You will still miss the sink for most part but 2' topper could work and they don't heat you up. Sleeponlatex is a good brand for them.
I'd actually avoid latex. It's a distinct feel and less universally liked than a temperature neutral memory-like foam like Serene Foam. And this is just my opinion, but... I think Serene Foam is the best topper material on the market.
hey folks,
does anyone by chance know which latex topper casper sent out to customers who felt their matresses were too firm in 2015? backstory: back in 2015 I bought the OG casper mattress and it was a bit firm. Casper sent out a latex topper. I replaced the latex topper last year in order to upgrade to a memory foam topper, which I have grown to dislike. Otherwise good latex topper recommendations are also welcome.
Thanks!
I am 190 lbs. Partner is 140 lbs Bought the Costco Casper King and was happy but after putting the tempur-pedic topper on it, it’s the perfect bed. And all in price was $1250. The toppers are currently in-store only at Costco. Beds are available online. Never had a bed we both enjoyed so much and had to share.
It is a little more on the warmer side. Coming from a purple mattress definitely a change but nothing uncomfortable or abnormal.
Glad you're happy with it. My Casper was fine when I got it but 3 years later it just wasn't supportive and that's why I'm here
I'm trying to guess if I want 3" latex or 3" serenity or something else on the top of my new mattress
We were scared it might be TOO soft—and don’t get me wrong, it is very soft—but we love it! My husband was having some back pain, and we weren’t sure if more softness or firmness would help. It’s been 4 days sleeping on it and both of us wish we would’ve bought one sooner! His back pain is gone (and hopefully stays that way.) I feel like I’m sleeping like a rock and not tossing and turning as much. My two dogs and cat love it too 😂 Highly recommended as of now!
Hi all,
I have a firm mattress I purchased in 2014. Still feels like the day I bought it in terms of firmness. I am a side sleeper mostly and my back is just starting to kill me, so I am now looking at either the Casper mattress topper or a tuft and needle topper to soften it up a little. I bought a memory foam topper and it was low density and I hated sinking into it. The Casper and t and n use either latex or adaptive foam it looks like. Has anyone tried either of these two toppers?
Thanks!
Greetings!
Due to age and inactivity, I have been experiencing some sciatica in my lower back, buttock, and thigh.
For about a week now I've been taking medication (flexeril, ibuprofen, and titrating prednisone) and doing various stretches to improve flexibility. This has worked to an extent, but it still takes me about two hours from the time I get up to where I can dress myself and use the toilet without pain, especially if I need to bear down.
I sleep on the basic model of Casper mattress that my wife and I have had for about a decade, and it has always been very comfortable for us both. However, what I have noticed now is that whether I take the flexeril and ibuprofen in the evening, I still wake up with cramping and pain on the outside of my thigh. It's about an 8 (on a 1 to 10 scale), and as I said, it takes me about 2 hours of careful stretching and walking before the pain is down to a 2 or 1. I've tried taking the flexeril and ibuprofen at night, but that has had no effect in reducing the 8 that occurs as soon as I wake up and try to get out of ben. I avoid bending or twisting my trunk, but just lifting the right leg up is a doozy!
A friend who is a personal trainer thinks that my mattress may be too soft, and while I sleep in total comfort at night with a large firm pillow under my knees and a heating pad to warm up my sacrum in the morning, the pain/cramp feeling is always at an 8 in the morning.
This friend suggested a hard foam topper on top of of our Queen size mattress, but I'm not sure where to start looking and how much firmness I should consider. We cannot afford to buy a new mattress.
Once I'm warmed up and walking around, I feel pretty damned good! Almost normal. It seems like this mattress topper is the key to reducing whatever is happening while I sleep that turns the dial from 1 to 8 while I sleep. I sleep on my back predominantly and always have.
Thanks very much!
I hate to break it to you, but I think you need a new mattress... I had a similar issue with an older Nectar mattress. I tried three different firm toppers and nothing worked. My pain improved with a new mattress.
Any mattress needs to be replaced after ten years, and foam mattresses fall apart even faster. Without support, you will have pain.
If you are having trouble with bills, you may want to try calling 211 (if you live in the US, that is). They can help find you social services in your area.
Good luck!
I’ve had my Casper wave hybrid for about a year now and I have also been having really bad back pain for a year! I do think the mattress is too soft for me and was also thinking about a topper. I listed the mattress for sale but no bites yet; I can’t afford a new one until I sell it. Hard place to be in.
As the title says, I recently got a 2" soft dunlop 100% latex mattress topper that was quite pricy at this subs recommendation because my Casper original (purchased 2019) was too warm and very firm. I like the feel of the topper but I can't help but be frustrated at how warm it is! I thought latex was much cooler than memory foam! What can I do now? Do I have to buy a wool topper?
TLDR: We got the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow (King). It was expensive, but I'm super happy with it. DM if you want my discount code.
Context: Back pain, shoulder pain, needed a hybrid mattress
The wife and I decided to gift ourselves an upgrade from a Queen to a King for Christmas this year (side note: if you're considering the same, DO IT!).
I put a ton of research into mattresses because of a history of back pain. We've been sleeping on a traditional mattress for the past decade and TBH it was pretty comfy and held up. The only problem was that we're both side-sleepers, and it was too firm for our shoulders and caused some soreness. Last year we got a 4-inch memory foam topper to solve this. It felt luxurious at first, but to my dismay, it quickly caused lower back pain due to my hips sinking in too much.
My hunch was that most spring mattresses were too firm and most memory foam mattresses had too much "give" that would lead to spinal misalignment, and after testing a bunch in mattress stores, that was basically confirmed. So, a hybrid mattress was the way to go. Best of both worlds.
Why Casper: Specific zones for shoulders/hips, great return policy
I looked at a ton of mattresses and although basically all of them claim they offer hip/spine support and solve back pain, almost none of them have any variation in construction around these zones. They're just the same three or four layers: springs, memory foam, then some other type of foam or gel layer. I wanted something that specifically addressed my two needs (soft around the shoulders, firmer around the hips). The Casper Wave Hybrid was the only mattress I found that specifically addressed this in its construction. It has standard layers at the foot and head of the bed, but in the center, there are two sections of supportive gel pods to support the waist.
(Yes, Purple mattresses also have gel pods, but as far as I saw, these were spread across the entire mattress, so it wasn't the targeted support I was looking for. Also, I tested a couple of Purple mattresses and they felt super weird since the gel pods are on top.)
I also liked Casper's delivery and return policy. I know they're not the only brand offering these terms, but a long trial period followed by free returns were a must. A lot of mattress companies claim to offer this but then charge restocking fees and pick-up fees.
2. Why Snow: I sleep hot, okay?As if Casper's most premium mattress in its largest size wasn't expensive enough, I also decided to add on the Snow technology. I wasn't convinced it would work, but I sleep pretty hot, especially here in NYC where the building-managed radiators bake the hell out of every apartment. My old mattress had a big, discolored sweat stain on my side of the bed to prove it.
3. My Casper mattress review: 7 days in, I'm sleeping great. [EDIT: More than a month in, this was the best decision I've made re: my sleep. My back feels great, I'm sleeping great, I'm not too hot, I've got tons of room thanks to the size upgrade. Two thumbs up.]
I've been giddy about this bed (ask my wife, I keep annoying her). Granted, most of my delight is due to the extra space we got from upgrading to a king. It's huge! I can practically do snow angels and not touch anything. But I've also been so comfortable.
Back support My back discomfort has completely disappeared (in bed at least; I still have bad posture). The mattress is really soft and comfortable, but my hips don't sink in at all, just the initial cushion. I feel totally supported on either side, my stomach, or my back.
Shoulder cushion: The shoulder zone is much softer than my old spring mattress. It's very comfortable for side sleepers. I expect Casper's cheaper two options would also do well in this area, but at the expense of hip/back support.
Snow technology: I think it's working. Casper's snow tech is nothing like Tempurpedic's tech, which literally feels refrigerated. Casper's is oriented more around wicking away heat, and it definitely seems to work. The bed isn't cool, per se, but it doesn't trap any of the heat like straight memory foam mattresses do. It even feels cooler than my spring mattress.
The setup: My mattress arrived sooner than expected (I think two days after ordering). All you have to do is roll it out and watch it expand. If you're changing bed frames as well, I strongly recommend setting that up first as the mattress is pretty heavy, so you'll want to roll it out on the bed. (We got the Thuma bed. maybe I'll review that too.) Also, pay attention to which direction you're rolling it. We rolled it out upside down which meant we had to flip over a fully expanded king mattress in our bedroom.
Conclusion: Try it. It's risk-free anyways.
You spend a third of your life sleeping, blah blah blah. You've heard all of the reasons why investing in a good bed is worth it. I tend to agree, but especially if you experience any type of back pain and need a truly top-notch mattress, I say give Casper a try. The guaranteed return policy makes it risk-free anyway. I'm not going to post a referral code here (I think the mods might remove it anyway?) but feel free to DM me if you want one. I think you'll get a small discount and I get some kind of reward if you do.
