Capsules are very individual based on your personal needs, style, and figure. Office wear varies from Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Miami, Savannah, and DC. If you want to fit in, this can matter. In general, office wear style is the same for over 50 and everyone else. (I'm 56). However, in our 50s we've developed our own style and typically have the confidence to build a wardrobe around that. We also often have changes to our figures we are coming to terms with and may have hot flashes. We do need to consider all of that. Many of the office appropriate stores still are: Talbot's, Banana Republic, JCrew are still good choices. Start here. The Gap still provides some inexpensive office basics. Old Navy can surprise you with the same. MM La Fleur is quality and worth checking out. Gorgeous clothes. Eileen Fisher does the independent 50 something "I own the office" and am in town for work between weekends on the shore really really well - good for a creative office. As usual, keep colors neutral - black, grey, navy unless you are in a southern city that does color and an office that brings the city's culture past its doors. For really hot humid weather, I like loose fitting linen. Yes it wrinkles so don't start with it ironed. If the wrinkles really bother you, consider mixing one linen piece with a tailored piece - loose linen trousers with a softly tailored jacket in silk or summer weight wool. A well tailored mid calf linen shirtdress with a cotton cardigan - keep colors business so you don't look like you're going to brinch. A linen button down with a tailored pair of summer weight trousers. Consider layers to take off when you step outside - an unlined tailored jacket is a really valuable wardrobe item innhot weather. A black tank top, almost every day. I work from home as a jeweler, so dovetail and red ant pants for work. Daily. One pair each - Levi's 501, wedgie, and some wide pair, and 2 pairs of black cotton sweats/joggers. Tomboyx boyshorts in black rainbow, matching bras. Black cotton drawstring shorts that serve as pajamas with a tank top. An outdoor research lightweight packable amazing down jacket. A black Duluth coat over it when needed. Feet have nerve issues, plantar fascitis, and Morton's neuroma so anytime I get out of bed and feet are hiring the floor I'm required to wear shoes. Boys size 6 black geometric Crocs are my daily. You don't have to ditch all your suits. Just mix them up. Wear the jean jacket with dress slacks or skirts or dresses Wear the blazers with trendy jeans and over more casual tops or sweaters (rather than a shell or blouse) Wear your crisp button downs and blouses with trendy jeans Look for toppers that are less suit-like: merino knit blazers, moto jackets, leather jackets, suede jackets. Wear less dressy shoes. Instead of standard issue office pumps, try menswear-inspired loafers. Or wear white sneakers. Story time: in my 20s and 30s, I wore conservative suits all the time even in smart casual offices, because I'm short with baby face and wanted to be taken seriously. Moving into my 40s I adopted the strategy I listed above, as it became aging for my industry, also just felt out of touch (I'm in technology so you can imagine). I also received compliments the first time I wore a jean jacket with my black dress slacks and dressy blouse... so... I feel you on this one! Now in my mid 50s I still love wearing suit jackets as they are warm, look sharp, add structure, and make me feel confident. Plus I feel I look less dowdy in a tailored jacket than in a cardigan.
