I hate to say it, but it does really depend. "Better" than another can mean many different things (cost, infrastructure, maintenance, LOE, etc etc.). From an seo standpoint, you can find case studies that show why each method is better than the rest. Personally, from a practicality standpoint, I like to keep everything together in a subfolder structure and it is what I normally recommend. It's one singular domain and logicically speaking all links/"authority" will be under one domain. But ccTLD and subdomains are perfectly suitable to get the job done, it just will most likely take more work and planning. This has been a long-winded, and frankly stupid, battle between Google and SEOs forever. Im starting a business the name I chose was an animal that not many people have heard of outside of the country the animal is from. I will not name the animal but it goes by two different names. One of the names is available in most domains and other is not.
Name A ; all tld's except for .com , .net, .org, .uk and the country its from are available. I could buy almost any cctld I have already purchased a few just incase I decide to go with the name.
Name B; all are available but its extremely hard for English speakers to pronounce the name
Name C; this is the scientific name of the animal everything is available but is hard to spell.
Would it be better to go with option A, B or C
I have also checked for companies with the name and there is only one registered in a different field and there are no trademarks for this name
Option D; I have also settled on changing the name by replacing one letter in the name with another letter it would still be pronounced similar and all tld's are available.

If you are worried about privacy...this is what I did for the whois for my domains. Name: It was my name. Address: I had a p.o. box for my company, so I used it for the address. E-mail: I used a specific gmail address just for registration of domains. Nothing else. Phone: I used one of those free voicemail numbers. In theory you can ask a friend to register the domain for you, use his business address and stuff. However, if you do anything illegal, authorities will go after him.
