Computer emergency response team
organisation which responds to computer security incidents
in cybersecurity refers to a Computer Emergency Response Team, also known as a Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), which serves as the first responder during a cyberattack. These teams are responsible for containing security incidents, minimizing their impact on operations and reputation, and supporting post-crisis recovery. CERTs are typically composed of IT professionals trained in incident response, risk assessment, forensic investigation, and related cybersecurity disciplines. The term "CERT" was first introduced in 1988 by the CERT Coordination Center (CERT-CC) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), which holds the trademark for the name globally. CMU promotes the use of the generic term "CSIRT" to describe such teams, while licensing the CERT mark to organizations that perform equivalent incident response functions.
In addition to organizational CERTs, national entities like US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team), operated by the Department of Homeland Security, play a critical role in protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure by analyzing cyber threats, disseminating warnings, and coordinating incident responses across federal agencies, private sector partners, and international organizations. US-CERT maintains a 24/7 Secure Operations Center, manages the National Cyber Alert System, and supports forensic investigations and malware analysis.
Beyond incident response teams, there are also certifications available for individuals seeking to build expertise in cybersecurity. For example, the Google Cybersecurity Certificate offers a beginner-friendly, job-ready program covering threat detection, incident response, network security, and the use of tools like Python, Linux, SQL, and SIEM systems. Similarly, Fortinet’s NSE Certification program provides tiered credentials—such as FCP, FCSS, and FCX—validating skills in secure networking, cloud security, SASE, and advanced security operations, with requirements ranging from passing specific exams to having industry experience. These certifications help professionals demonstrate their competence in cybersecurity domains and are widely recognized in the industry.

See if you can get int Ryerson CyberSecure Catalyst program instead; it's cheaper, you get 3 industry certifications and you would get a co-op placement at the end I believe. I did the certificates and I don't think they were all that great, for a few reasons.

Gap year from high school? If so, I don’t recommend you pursue it. Certificates are more for people who already have work experience or a degree. It complements it and helps the individual further their goals. Employability with a certificate alone won’t really help you. I recommend that you take some time to research some possible career goals, talk to people who work those jobs, and then see what’s the best path to pursue it.
