I'm looking for a high quality, free text to speech (TTS) AI that sounds as close to a real human as possible — preferably with multiple voice options (male/female, accents, etc). It could be an app, website, or downloadable software. I’ve tried a few that sound robotic or overly synthetic, and I’m hoping there’s something better out there that still doesn’t require payment.
Any recommendations?

The built-in ones that Micorosft Edge uses are pretty good, they sound much more natural than the ones used elsewhere in Windows. You can save a document as a PDF and get Edge to read it out, choose different voices etc. Main downside is it's not as convenient as typing stuff in and getting an MP3 back.

What would be a good AI voice generator/TTS for making character voices, I've spent the entire day trying to find one that works with no luck, I'm not looking to use it commercially, just in my own time like when I'm playing DnD or something
If possible I'd like to be able to use a wide range of voices so I could for example make the voice of an orc, a dwarf or an elf etc
I've been trying to find one that I can install locally on my PC and run from it so I don't need to worry about the internet going down.
If it helps narrow things down I would be fine with paying if it's a one time purchase but don't want a contract or monthly payment etc.
Any help would be much appreciated, I've been losing my mind over this for the past approximately 8 hours.

Your options are basically: Moegoe. Fast, but is built for chinese/japanese so english can be not great on it. Lots of anime character voice options and you can train your own. Bark. Slower, but it's very natural sounding. Voice cloning isn't great but it's possible, and there's options. Sometimes it's a bit weird but otherwise alright. Tortoise TTS. Good quality voices, but less natural sounding than bark imo. Fairly consistent with alright voice cloning. But it's very slow. All can run local/offline and are free. Tortoise lets you be able to generate random voices that you can save and reuse.
