Does the Chase Freedom Unlimited have a 5% cash back category?
The Chase Freedom Unlimited (see rates and fees) does not offer rotating 5% cash back categories but earns an unlimited 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel. It also earns 3% back on drugstore purchases and dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery service, and 1.5% back on all other purchases.
Can I earn 5% cash back on purchases beyond the $1,500 quarterly limit?
No, you cannot earn 5% cash back on bonus categories after you've reached a combined $1,500 across the quarter's bonus categories. However, you can continue to earn extra points per dollar spent if you use your Chase Freedom Flex on eligible purchases such as restaurants, travel, and gas.
How do I earn 5% cash back with the Chase Freedom card?
Cardholders earn 5% cash back, in the form of Ultimate Rewards points, in bonus categories every quarter. The bonus categories are announced two weeks before the quarter begins and are capped at up to $1,500 for a total of $75 cash back in value.
Any guesses on what April - June will be? is it going to be restaurants 5% back?
Norwegian Cruise Line, Dining, and American Heart Association
I never thought we’d see 7x (1x base + 2x ongoing dining + 4x quarterly category) on dining again! It will be available to activate on the app/website starting 12/15.
Edit: For those who are skeptical about the stacking, I can confirm I am earning 7% on dining on my Freedom Flex. My first purchases for the quarter posted today (1/5/26) and show 7% earn in the Ultimate Rewards portal.

Each quarter to earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases....
It is easy to understand if using the card for 5% reward category. But how about mix of spending?
For example, during Oct - Dec 2023, I spend first $1500 ($1000 for 5% reward, $500 for 1% reward), then I spend another $500 in Costco, will this $500 get 5% reward? Totally I spend $2000 on the card during Oct - Dec 2023.
When it says "up to $1500 in combined purchase"? Does it mean first $1500 purchase only? Or first $1500 purchase for 5% category (not counting spending with 1% reward)?
Thanks.
