Do you pay by the hour/ride like an uber? Or is it salary with unlimited use? What does the driver do with your car after dropping you off? Say for example you work half an hour from home, do they drive the car home after and put double the mileage on your car? Do you pay them when they are idling waiting for you if you are delayed or going to a show/restaurant (goes back to the first question)? Does it cause any (even if mild) sense of anxiety knowing someone is waiting for you to finish and leave? Is there any inconvenience having to tell someone when to pick you up, especially if you have a sporadic work schedule and could be delayed by several hours? Or if you have to wait for them because you didn't tell them in time and they are stuck in traffic?
I hire one as needed, he charges $80 an hour + tip for anything over 4 hours. He’s worked up to 14 hours for me with a lot of sitting around. He has his own Mercedes but have had him drive my car once which we agreed on $50 an hour (that was the 14 hours). We’re in NYC, he’s reliable and I use him to take employees from overseas around. He’ll charge a flat reduced fee for the entire week. In terms of waiting around that’s what he expects, he has 2 iPads and watches shows. Edit: our guy is also an awesome driver, he’s a 60 year old retired MTA bus driver. Knows NYC like the back of his hand but has also avoided some crazy accidents when I’ve been in the car Answer from throwaway15172013 on reddit.com

Had a driver in Asia (fairly common there, it's a common company-paid benefit). It's salaried $X/month, generally just a regular schedule but with plenty of exceptions. The expectation is they're essentially available 24/7, but within reason - you should tell them if you need them on weekends or extra late/early, and they can tell you if they need some time off. There's an unspoken agreement that you won't make their schedule miserable, like if you need em for a full Saturday every few months that's fine, every weekend then you're being a dick. They usually hang around wherever you are. If there's no parking they'll head to somewhere nearby (btw having a driver makes it very convenient to get around in areas with minimal parking). In Asia where there's a lot of drivers, they'll have lil driver hangout areas that they all know lol, so it's basically a break time for them while they wait for you. I guess in the US it may be different. Generally you should message them a couple min before you need them, and they'll be there in <10 min, or tell them in advance when they need to be back. No anxiety, it's a decent-paying chill job, it's not a dream job but they're generally content. Yes, sometimes there's unexpected traffic and you have to wait, which can suck, but as long as you help them plan ahead, it's not common. Big caveat that drivers in the western world are probably a pretty different experience. Very different work culture and labor laws, kinda touchy about servant-like work, and way more expensive. For context pretty much everyone I knew making $500k+ in Asia had a company-assigned driver (or had the option but didn't want one). In the US I can't imagine someone having a driver while making <$3m.
