How do I choose the right size riding lawn mower for my yard?
Choosing the right size riding lawn mower depends largely on the size and terrain of your yard. For smaller yards, typically under half an acre, a mower with a cutting width of 30 to 34 inches might be sufficient. For medium-sized yards between half an acre to one acre, consider mowers with 40 to 44 inches cutting width. Larger properties often benefit from mowers with 46 inches or wider decks to cover more ground quickly.
Also, consider maneuverability and storage space. Zero-turn mowers offer excellent control for tight spaces, while larger decks reduce mowing time on open lawns. Assess your yard's layout and storage options before deciding.
What features should I look for in a reliable riding lawn mower?
When shopping for a reliable riding lawn mower, consider these key features:
- Engine power and type: A strong engine suited to your yard size ensures efficient mowing.
- Cutting width: Wider decks cover more ground but may be less maneuverable.
- Steering and control: Zero-turn radius mowers offer excellent maneuverability for complex yards.
- Battery life or fuel efficiency: For electric mowers, longer battery life is important; for gas models, fuel efficiency matters.
- Durability of components: Look for sturdy materials and quality parts like steel decks and reliable spindle bearings.
Balancing these features with your budget and yard needs can help you find a mower that performs well over time.

Riding lawn mower recommendation
Figure out what size deck you can fit through the tightest obstacle in your yard. Then find a mower of that size with the most powerful engine you can find.
Ask yourself if you're just going to use it for mowing, or if you're going to get a tow behind aerator, dethatcher, or yard cart. If you want to pull any true ground engaging equipment, you'd be best served by going a bit over your 2K budget.

$2,000 Budget. Looking for Riding Mower recommendations.
Title may be bit if an oxymoron, but looking for a pretty decent mower that won’t break the bank. I have about 1/4-1/3 of mostly flat lawn so I don’t need anything fancy, just a very basic rider. My Craftsman just spit the bit after 18 years, pretty happy with that if they’re still made pretty well. Just looked at Cub Cadets base model, $2400 which doesn’t see horrible and will look at a Deere, so just looking for some opinions. Thanks!
