Cheapest I think is to get one server for your DB and application. A T3 nano or micro should be sufficient for small projects. I do understand that running your DB and your application on one server is not ideal, because of load and security reasons. I myself run a small project, and decided to go with RDS MySQL with the smallest instance there is. This because of all the features RDS provides. It saves a lot of time and works like a charm! For the application itself I run a T3micro. Everything costs me around 15 dollars a month. More on reddit.com

I am currently using Postgres on AWS RDS. It is costing me about $15 per month despite the fact that I have only 1 table that I query a few times per day. I'm not sure why it costs so much.
The settings I chose are: db.ts.micro - Burstable Classes - 20GB
Are there any settings I should turn on/off to minimise cost. Is there a better AWS database to use for a side project with only a small amount of occasional traffic (I prefer a relational DB if possible)? I don't mind if there is a small delay while the DB server instance boots if that makes it cheaper.

Hello, I’m new to AWS and cloud in general and I want to have a db for my app (‘till now I only used free tiers from neondb(aws-wrapper, I know)). I’m looking for a solution to have a postgresql database on aws, but when I try to create one RDS Postgresql it comes down to ~$50/month. Isn’t any way to make this cheaper? I heard about spinning it up on a EC2 instance, but that wouldn’t make it significantly slower? Any tips? thanks in advance!

I've had a PostgreSQL server on my EC2 for years. If you're serving 10's of millions of requests a day then yes, it may be slower. But if you're just getting started (which it seems) then install one on your EC2 server. Most of the Unix distributions have packages that make it super easy.

It's been a bit since I have looked at this service, but Aurora Postgres Serverless might work. Just have it scale to zero when it's not in use. Also, do not do AWS Backups those r crazy expensive. They already do snapshots for you. AWS Backups are a separate service.
