Define "safely"? Since CheatEngine is packed with not only bloatware, but probably also spyware. #Reason Reason comes bundled with the installer. It's tricky to remove so I would go as far as calling it a virus.

When I downloaded it off what I thought was the official site (cheatengine.org) it registered as malware. I’ve used cheat engine for years and it’s never happened before?

it's safe. it's just that AV's are now protecting you from yourself as well. You can just click on decline on the third part offers if you don't want them and you're fine.
