I am going to be in college this upcoming fall (decided to start looking at what to buy early) and I was wondering everyone's opinion on chinos vs. colored jeans (pros, cons, what situations they are better for, etc.)
I'd recommend chinos over colored jeans... chinos are versatile pants. They can be worn casually, or dressed up to business casual. Colored jeans tend to be stuck on the very-casual end of the spectrum (what colors are we talking here?)
There are some cases where a nice pair of dark blue jeans will definitely make more sense than a pair of chinos, but I don't think that holds when you get into weird colors of jeans (teal?)
My personal preference- jeans look best in only blue, but chinos look great in khaki, navy, dark/light grey etc.
I was wondering what the difference was between these colored jeans versus these chinos. I really cannot tell the difference, and I hope someone can explain it to me. Thanks!

I usually like black chinos because they go with everything, but its frustrating how quickly they seem to attract lint and dust.
Apparently I should go for twill chinos and stick to navy, as its closest to black in versatility and less likely to attract lint.
Anyone here have any advice? Would navy not be as bad as black? And is twill better?
I am looking to get another pair of pants for work. I work in a business casual environment. Most people where "smart casual" but i rather stick with business casual. I have a pair of navy Chinos but wants to pair of black work pants that will go with almost anything.
I have a pair of 484 J Crew black jeans and have worn them with wool sweaters and even a sport coat. Do I need to get a pair of black trousers or would that be redundant?
I currently have some darkish-wash and black (but not pitch black) jeans, is anything else in vogue ATM?
Edit: in the US
I mean in general, but just as an example: would there be a reason to choose this over this? (That is, assuming that they're both the same color)
Formality. Chinos can be dressed up and dressed down to an extent, reaching farther than jeans can.
Technically, both links are chinos because they're both made of 'chino cloth' - essentially a casual twill.
First link has slit/seam pockets, and is a bit more traditional. Second is five pocket, which is a bit more casual and what you usually see with denim.
The slit pockets are a bit more versatile to me, although some people will view anything not 5 pocket as 'dress pants'. Five pocket is marginally easier to fit because you won't get pocket flare.
As a 21 year old student my outfits tend to consist of joggers, trackies and when dressing up, jeans. However, I'm trying to incorporate chinos into my day to day style as they are comfier and have a wider variety of colours. I wanted to hear what everyone else's thoughts on chinos are, your recommended brands and whether you'd wear them instead of jeans in your day to day life.
