As a 21 year old student my outfits tend to consist of joggers, trackies and when dressing up, jeans. However, I'm trying to incorporate chinos into my day to day style as they are comfier and have a wider variety of colours. I wanted to hear what everyone else's thoughts on chinos are, your recommended brands and whether you'd wear them instead of jeans in your day to day life.

Chinos are lighter than jeans so they will be better when it is warmer out and they are also better in a more professional environment. Jeans are great for a casual setting and can take a real beating. Popular brands for chinos are J. Crew, Banana Republic, Bonobos, Lululemon and Asket. Also heard some good things from more budget options like Goodfellow and Uniqlo. I have gotten in to more technical clothing lately from brands like Outlier and Western Rise. So you definitely have plenty of options to start looking. I find myself wearing chinos a in warmer months and to work/nice places and my jeans when it is a bit colder out.

A nice core should consist of both. A dark raw selvedge jean and a khaki (or gray) chino would give you tons of versatility. Both can be dressed up or down depending on the environment and both are easy to match. Chinos are going to go a bit further in most work environments. Where jeans are a risky pick (interviews), chinos are generally more acceptable. If you have the money to spend, some of the higher end chinos with 2 or 4 way stretch are the way to go, particularly since you seem to prefer joggers. Some good options: Bonobos Tech Chino, Woodies Performance Chino, Hill City Everyday Pant, and Ministry of Supply Momentum Chino. Outlier makes great stuff but they retired their traditional 60/30 chino and haven't announced a replacement yet. A lot of people like Lululemon's ABC pant but I'm not really a fan. Uniqlo is a good budget option.

When it comes to casual wear, a night out, or feeling dressy, what type of pants do you prefer, jeans or chinos? These are the two types of pants I see most men wear for casual dressy events/nights or just for running errands super quickly. Sometimes people wear them for their jobs too.

Jeans I feel are very casual, give a rugged kind of look, and are very much a smart casual type of outfit. There are different types of cuts for jeans (Ex: boot cut, slim fit, athletic fit, etc) and they can come in different styles (ripped jeans, skinny jeans, etc). They do come in other types of color as well, such as blue, black, grey, white, and even beige. The blue shades even come in different washes, where some are lighter, some are darker, and some are medium blues. They look great with sneakers and boots too. All of this shows how diverse jeans are, however, the only thing is I think jeans are hit or miss when it comes to how comfortable they are. Some brands, styles, and cuts of jeans I feel are way too tight and are not comfortable. Other types of jean brands I think are super comfy and I can live in them. I know every brand/style/cut is different from other types, but it can be a pain in the ass finding the right pair that will be stylish and comfy.

Chino, on the other hand, I feel are a step up from jeans in the sense that they are less casual and are typically more comfy in my opinion. They can still be casual, but more people wear them at things like semi-formal events, where dress pants aren’t necessary required. I like how there is much more variety when it comes to colors. I’ve seen them in grey, beige, tan, maroon, olive, navy blue, and even pastel colors. There aren’t any stilly styles like ripped chinos or anything like that, which I think is more mature. Again, just like jeans, the brand can make your break you depending on if they run small or big. I don’t see chinos in other styles like “slim fit”, “athletic fit”, etc. as much as jeans too.

What do you think are better? Jeans or chinos? I like both but I do honestly prefer chinos slightly more as I find them to be more comfortable.

I am looking to get another pair of pants for work. I work in a business casual environment. Most people where "smart casual" but i rather stick with business casual. I have a pair of navy Chinos but wants to pair of black work pants that will go with almost anything.

I have a pair of 484 J Crew black jeans and have worn them with wool sweaters and even a sport coat. Do I need to get a pair of black trousers or would that be redundant?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some fashion advice to step up my wardrobe game. Currently, my closet consists of just two pairs of jeans, and I'm in dire need of a wardrobe upgrade. Jeans have been my go-to for years, with my last venture into chinos happening nearly eight years ago – a fact that still makes me chuckle!

My current work situation is remote, which has been a significant factor in my casual attire. However, I've decided it's high time to refresh my pants collection.

So, I'm here to inquire about the ideal occasions to sport chinos, trousers, or jeans. My goal is to maintain a core rotation of 2 or 3 pairs of jeans while incorporating more casual trousers and chinos into my repertoire. I've heard that chinos are better suited for the summer, while trousers are more appropriate for the winter. However, I'm looking for versatile options that can seamlessly transition between casual and formal events, such as gatherings, lunches, and dinners.

If you were to recommend a few pairs of chinos and trousers to kickstart my collection, what colors would you suggest? I've already ordered black and navy CK golf trousers but open to any other suggestions.

I genuinely appreciate any advice you can share! 😊

Thanks!

I've heard that chinos are better suited for the summer, while trousers are more appropriate for the winter Not necessarily true, relaxed linen trousers will be far better suited for summer than a mid-weight cotton chino. Likewise, some of my warmest pants are some Natolino cotton chinos. As for formality, they both can be a wide range. If you get double-stitched rugged chinos, they will be far more casual than a creased version. Similarly, orphaned suit pants would have a different vibe from a casual easy-waisted wool trouser. Honestly, my advice would be to start with a single chino in navy, tan, olive, or brown. Pair that with a single pair of trousers. Charcoal will be the most versatile, but this also depends on your current wardrobe. Fit depends on your own taste, but a relaxed fit is currently popular, as are pleats. I'd go with dissimilar fits so you can experiment as you expand your wardrobe. I do not suggest filling out your whole wardrobe in one go, it's a great way to be stuck with one type of clothing from one phase of your life. Do it slowly over time and find which pieces, colors, fits, fabrics, and silhouettes you prefer.

Chinos are the single most versatile pant you can own. And I say this as a jeans guy. Grab a pair in khaki and be amazed as they compliment everything else you own. If you're in environments where tailored jackets are part of the dress code, I'd grab a pair of medium grey wool trousers as well. They'll pair back to any sport coat and will serve you any time you need to dress professionally but a full suit would be too much. If you don't ever need to dress nicer than business casual, get a second pair of chinos instead, preferably in a darker or lighter shade of khaki than the first. Avoid navy- they're much less useful than they look at first glance.

r/EDC on Reddit: Jeans or Chino or Cargo Pants or suit pants for Every Day?
January 17, 2022 -

Simple question, which is your every day bottoms wear of choice to be ready for any situation and type of day?

Jeans are my best bet. Dinner, day in the office, day out in the field(I work as a technician), a friend needs a hand mounting a TV, whatever it is. I like the strong material that, looks good when tailored, not too restrictive for movement and strong pockets to carry just about anything. I work in a corporate office, and they are ok with Jeans, so I wear them every day of the weak. The wife bought me a pair of smart casual pants, but she just doesn't get that it's not practical and there are some situations where I just wish I rather have a pair of jeans.

I know allot of people prefer the cargo pants because of the utility, but don't think it's appropriate for every day and every situation.

Also from a style perspective, I think jeans give you a decent and neat look.

Love to hear what the EDC community uses and why? Could learn a thing or two.

December 27, 2019 - Definitely jeans. I've always thought chinos don't even need to exist. Never saw the point of a style of pants between jeans and dress pants. In casual settings, jeans are better than chinos. In dressier settings, dress pants are better chinos.

Gentlemen here, do you wear skinny or super skinny jeans? Not slim jeans, but skinny jeans with small leg or leg hugging openings. Do you wear scarfs in winter for style?

Also are you open to wear v neck t-shirts or unbuttoned shirts with chest hair puking out? Both of which are popular in Europe.

I’m not sure if my observation is correct. When I went to Ireland and North Ireland last month, I saw no one wear chinos/khakis. However back in America, most american men seem prefer to wear chinos/khakis even when they are in casual settings, those who wear jeans will opt for straight or relaxed fit jeans. What is your thought on this, why fo many americans like to wear chinos instead of jeans? Because chinos are more comfortable than even baggy jeans?

Need to pick one chinos and jeans. For the chinos I can't decide betweent the colours. Which is the most versatile from the 2. Same for the jeans. Can't decide which wash I want. They kinda look all the same.

1 from Levi's 512. They are khaki chinos slim fit. 2 from h&m khaki slim fit. 3,4 and 5 are from Lee's. I'm looking a nice light washed blue denim jeans. No. 3 seems to fit the best but the other 2 fit fine as well.

What do you guys think about chinos, always been a jeans guy,but I like the more elegant quality about chinos. Any suggestions, like, what occasions are the best time to wear them, does the baggy trend apply to them like jeans, are they too old for guys in their twenties, and what to look for in terms of quality. Any other forms of advice would also be appreciated.

Chinos should be a part of an adult man’s wardrobe. If jeans are technically workwear (based on history not necessarily modern use) and slacks were professional/business/dressier attire, Chino’s cover pretty much everything in between. I’d avoid overly slim or baggy versions. Check Gap, Banana, Bonobos and J Crew for what would be considered acceptable fits for the 2020’s. All these brands offer reasonable quality for the price. The biggest distinction is do you want something with a bit of wash (weekends/evenings) or something a bit sharper for the office. Technical material might be ok depending on your workplace, but classic cotton is the standard. I avoided chino’s and khakis for a long time since they felt a bit boring and were almost normcore in my younger years. However, as someone who’s been out of school longer than I attended school, the status quo changes. What was considered “old man” wear is now a more mature option than wearing jeans all the time. I still have a nice selvedge denim collection, but when I’m socializing with other adults (especially in a professional setting or nicer venue), I’ll usually bust out the chino’s. In my organization, one can pretty much determine someone’s position in the company based on their choice of pants when we meet up outside the office. As for when to wear them, lighter colors for daytime/warmer months and darker in the evening/winter. Pair with polo’s or even better a thick oxford cotton button down color for a timeless look. The real secret to acing this is the accessories. A nice brown leather belt with brown loafers has been in for nearly 50 years and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. However, more modern cuts and also pair well with a webbed belt and lower profile sneakers like Nike Killshot.

I love chinos and so will you! In my opinion, they clearly feel nicer to the touch and they’re just less rigid and more comfortable to wear than jeans. Plus jeans are absolutely oppressive in the heat while chinos breathe and flow (check out linen pants too if you get around to it one day)! On top of that you get more color options. If we exclude physical labor, anywhere you’d wear jeans, chinos are very likely acceptable and then some because they can look a bit smarter than jeans. I’m sure you can find specific outfits where jeans are better (maybe a more rugged jacket or workwear looks), but they work for ts, polos, collared shirts, etc. Men in their twenties will look great in chinos. I originally thought of chinos as “fancy” because all I knew were jeans. I never really thought about it, but I almost imagined chinos as being similar to wool trousers for a suit. I now see them as being on a very similar spot on the formality spectrum as jeans, but more comfortable and more put together (but still casual). Maybe I’m officially an old person, but I don’t think tight or baggy is ever the best option. IMO, let it roughly follow the form of your body with 1.5 inches (or so?) of pinchable fabric. Guessing on that measurement. Google “put this on chinos” and see what they’ve written about the topic. I’ve found that site to be helpful.

Did an 8-day test run with my backpack and realized I don't need both my blue (cotton) chinos AND my blue jeans.

Which do you take while travelling? For context, I'll be travelling Europe between hostels for 40 days this May-June and also have shorts and nylon zip-off pants that barely take up space.

I always wear dickies flat front chino pants, and when brand new feel great but after several washes the pants become flimsy so I’m looking for a pair of denim jeans that fit like dickies, or chino in general, with the pockets etc.
