Chinos vs. trousers & formal pants | Differences in style, fit & fabric
The Smart Chino by SANVT comes in a timeless design and luxurious quality · Suit trousers are definitely a more classic and sophisticated, but sometimes also more old-fashioned alternative to chinos. Of course, it all depends on the model, the cut, the occasion and the fabric.

r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: Chinos vs Trousers vs Jeans
September 1, 2023 -

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some fashion advice to step up my wardrobe game. Currently, my closet consists of just two pairs of jeans, and I'm in dire need of a wardrobe upgrade. Jeans have been my go-to for years, with my last venture into chinos happening nearly eight years ago – a fact that still makes me chuckle!

My current work situation is remote, which has been a significant factor in my casual attire. However, I've decided it's high time to refresh my pants collection.

So, I'm here to inquire about the ideal occasions to sport chinos, trousers, or jeans. My goal is to maintain a core rotation of 2 or 3 pairs of jeans while incorporating more casual trousers and chinos into my repertoire. I've heard that chinos are better suited for the summer, while trousers are more appropriate for the winter. However, I'm looking for versatile options that can seamlessly transition between casual and formal events, such as gatherings, lunches, and dinners.

If you were to recommend a few pairs of chinos and trousers to kickstart my collection, what colors would you suggest? I've already ordered black and navy CK golf trousers but open to any other suggestions.

I genuinely appreciate any advice you can share! 😊

Thanks!

I've heard that chinos are better suited for the summer, while trousers are more appropriate for the winter Not necessarily true, relaxed linen trousers will be far better suited for summer than a mid-weight cotton chino. Likewise, some of my warmest pants are some Natolino cotton chinos. As for formality, they both can be a wide range. If you get double-stitched rugged chinos, they will be far more casual than a creased version. Similarly, orphaned suit pants would have a different vibe from a casual easy-waisted wool trouser. Honestly, my advice would be to start with a single chino in navy, tan, olive, or brown. Pair that with a single pair of trousers. Charcoal will be the most versatile, but this also depends on your current wardrobe. Fit depends on your own taste, but a relaxed fit is currently popular, as are pleats. I'd go with dissimilar fits so you can experiment as you expand your wardrobe. I do not suggest filling out your whole wardrobe in one go, it's a great way to be stuck with one type of clothing from one phase of your life. Do it slowly over time and find which pieces, colors, fits, fabrics, and silhouettes you prefer.

Chinos are the single most versatile pant you can own. And I say this as a jeans guy. Grab a pair in khaki and be amazed as they compliment everything else you own. If you're in environments where tailored jackets are part of the dress code, I'd grab a pair of medium grey wool trousers as well. They'll pair back to any sport coat and will serve you any time you need to dress professionally but a full suit would be too much. If you don't ever need to dress nicer than business casual, get a second pair of chinos instead, preferably in a darker or lighter shade of khaki than the first. Avoid navy- they're much less useful than they look at first glance.
