For mine and my boyfriend’s 1 year anniversary, I had the idea of setting Christmas lights (or some kind of low level lighting) on the bottom edge of my backseat and having him sit in the back while we cruise around at night and I play him his favorite songs. A “music taxi” of sorts.
I was wondering if this is something worth taking the time to set up or if it’s a dumb fantasy I will never see come to fruition.

Son-of-cop and guy that enjoys reading state code here. In most states, the only light you're not allowed to have in your car is a blue light. For example, in Iowa code 321.423 section 3a you're not allowed to have a blue light illuminated in your car. This is pretty standard in most states, but you might want to check your code. I would not recommend Christmas lights as they get hot and you'll have to figure out how to plug them in, but you can get led strip lights on amazon that plug into your DC outlet on your car that can match up to the beat of the music and you can also control the color off of your phone. I got some for when I uber and they were like $20. This post might get removed since it's not technically mechanic advice and more legal advice, just fyi. No skin off my back answering your question though.

Laws vary by state. In pennsylvania where I live, any kind of ornamental lighting that is visible from the outside of a vehicle is illegal. Just do it; it is only for a little while and harmless, stick to back roads where there are no cops to pull you over.

Did it a few years ago, used white lights that didn't obstruct view or lighting, got smiles from plenty of people including cops. I'd avoid any that are going to flash or blink though.

I’ll be the grinch here... if it’s not illegal it should still be avoided. Flashing lights are a definite no go and probably even solid if they’re red/blue/green

I mean you very likely will get pulled over, I’m not really sure what they’d charge you with, but you rolling probable cause if you do. That being said I think you should do it, just don’t be stupid about it
