r/nordvpn on Reddit: Change Chrome app's DNS settings to what?
September 2, 2022 -

What DNS could I use within mobile android Chrome app's DNS settings?. Because I now know I have to configure each internet browser's DNS setting to be compatable with NordVPN.

Using Samsung S21 Ultra Snapdragon android 12 One UI 4.1 phone.

Is there a NordVPN URL that can be used in Chrome settings through "Use secure DNS" - "Choose another provider" - "Customized" to connect specifically to the NordVPN DNS?.

Or rather is there a NordVPN DNS that can be used in Chrome settings to be safe & compatable alongside the NordVPN app?.

I don't see an option in Chrome settings to input both of NordVPN's DNS addresses "103.86.96.100" & "103.86.99.100".

Or would selecting Chrome's DNS option of "Use your current service provider" make the NordVPN app's already configured DNS settings to be as Chrome's DNS settings?. I'm not sure if turning on NordVPN app would set itself to be as the phone's "default DNS resolver" to handle any internet browsers DNS settings when those browsers DNS settings are set to use current service provider or default DNS resolver or current isp. I did set Chrome as the phone's default browser if that has anything to do with it.

I wouldn't use Google's cloudflare DNS of 1.1.1.1 because NordVPN app's VPN server is disconnecting periodically while using that DNS variation of 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com within android's built in DNS Settings, but while still then browsing internet even with the VPN "Kill-Switch" turned on. I read in a Google search that others had the same problem, so I don't use cloudflare now.

September 2, 2020 - Instead, Chrome will use an internal list of DoH-capable DNS servers, and if the user has one configured as the OS-wide DNS setting, Chrome will use that server's DoH interface instead of the default one, and replace plaintext DNS queries with encrypted DoH queries on the fly. In addition, for situations where users don't want to change their Android device's system-wide DNS server to one that supports DoH, Google also lets users customize Chrome's DoH server just for their browser alone.

DNS Overrider seems to be an extension that might do what you want, but reading the reviews and the details of it, I don't get a positive feeling towards it. However to set up a custom DNS server, you don't need to do it on your browser. You can set it on your operating system, and maybe that's why Google has decided to remove it from Chrome's settings.

Assuming you're on a Windows machine, you'll need to do this:

Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

Then from the left panel select "Change adapter settings".

A new window will open, listing you all the network connections that you have (i.e. Ethernet, WiFi, etc.).

Select the one you're using to connect to the Internet, and right click on it and select "Properties".

In the list from the opened dialog, scroll down to select either of these options depending on what IP version you're using (typically IP v.4):

Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)

(or)

Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Without unchecking the item, click on "Properties" button, and manipulate the DNS Server from the second section in this dialog:

And then confirm and save all the changes you've applied.

I always keep my DNS servers custom, which somewhat optimizing several factors. The addresses used in the screenshot are Open DNS addresses.
