Since Chrome has Google's noodly appendages all over it, I wasn't sure if it was best to keep a 'safe distance' from the browser itself? (There's a bit of irony in this question since I've been using Chrome's password manager for years, so all of my logins are already firmly lodged in the belly of Google.)

Or should I forego using Chrome altogether? I'm brand new to 1Password (I just started a trial) so I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to what's going on behind the scenes.

It is not. Theoretically, if you were to use 1Password for Mac or Windows on its own without the use of an extension, but still work a web browser, you'd be left copying and pasting your data into that web browser. That would expose your data to the system clipboard, which is accessible by anything on your system. It'd also open you up to any number of phishing attempts, which 1Password would normally try to protect you from. I'm personally using a mixture of Brave and Firefox. Switching web browsers really isn't so bad, and you may end up liking what you land on more than Chrome itself.

The first option is the stable version. Which is the recommended one for most users. The second and third are test versions. The beta version may contain new features that're not quite ready for public release, but it's usually functional without any major bugs. The nightly version is updated very frequently, and contains the newest features that are still work in progress and which haven't been thoroughly tested yet. This version may contain more bugs that break basic functionality.

I used to use a Chrome extension called "1 Password - Application Required" on Chrome that worked pretty well.

I had that extension and had 1passsword installed locally and everything worked fine. I did CTRL+SHIFT+X to fill passwords etc...

Now that extension is gone? Seems like the only available is the "1 Password" where it does not intereact with the locally intalled one.

So now I kinda have 2 1password instances running (locally and browser), they both use different shorcuts since the browser one uses CTRL+SHIFT+X... if I set them to the same shortcut its like they will conflict?

I don't get it. Am I not supposed to use the locally installed App?

I purchased a "Perpetual" license for 1Password 7 just one week before they announced the switch to a subscription-based model. To me, it's frustrating and feels like an unfair business practice. Why sell a perpetual license and then make it nearly impossible for your customers to get the extension for supported browsers and operating systems?

If I choose to continue using "outdated" software and OS, that's my choice, but at the very least, I should be able to access the tools I paid for. I also strongly resist buying into subscription-based software and entering what I see as the "Subscription Exploitation Economy."

I've tried downloading the extension "1Password-4.7.5.90.crx" from multiple sources, only to be hit with the infamous "Error 400." I even found official posts from 1Password staff linking to the file, but the same error persists.

Does anyone know where I can download the classic extension that works for 1Password 7? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As the title says.... I figured this was the most basic function that it'd offer but it doesn't do this by default. I had lastpass previously and it would offer to save my username/password after a successful login if it didn't already have it stored.

Can't remember if the phone app does this. But do I have to enable it on the Android app as well?

I like many of the ways 1Password works. However, this is one of my frustrations with 1Password. It doesn't do that. Instead, you save it BEFORE you login. In other words, you enter in your username, and then password. When you enter in your password, you'll see a popup that says "Save Password". I dislike this approach because first, I will often forget to click save... my instinct is to log in! But secondly, I have yet to confirm what I am entering is valid. I mean, sure, when I enter in the correct password, it will ultimately update... but still... The same issue happens when creating a login -- you save it before you create the account. So if the account creation is rejected by the site (e.g, username already exists, or password does not meet requirements), you've now created an invalid record within 1Password. For Android -- it does work as you would expect, as long as you have it set up right. You enter in username, password, and click login. You'll then get a pop-up asking if you wish to save the password.

When I was first saving passwords into 1Password using the browser extension, I remember that being a pain. You can save passwords directly into 1Password before submitting the login form, but you’re not missing anything: 1Password X will not offer to save a password after logging in. Of course that creates complication: you might not know if the password you typed out is correct until seeing a successful login. But saving the password before logging in was an intentional choice that greatly reduces the possibility of losing data. Two potential data loss issues can arise when 1Password tries to save the data after submitting it: 1Password might not realize you meant to save that as a new item and not prompt you 1Password might not be able to save the data (maybe you haven't fully set up the extension yet, you don't have the Create new items permission on any of the vaults you've added, or it doesn't have an internet connection) Additionally, one of the 1Password browser extension developers said this on their forum: This feature is something we've looked into several times and have no plans to give up on it, but currently offering to save a Login item after successfully signing in requires a few things we're not willing to do. To name one in particular, this would require arbitrarily capturing and maintaining data you've entered into fields as well as all the details of the page in the background, assuming you might want to save a login, as you navigate websites. With that, as I mentioned here last year, currently the most efficient and least invasive way to ensure your Login items are secured by 1Password with all of the correct data is by offering to save a new item from within the fields being saved themselves. I know it's not the most convenient method, but I assure you the conversation is still being had and the feature is still being researched with your security first on our list. In the near term, there's a decent workaround: Enter login credentials as normal Press "Save in 1Password", then press Sign In Sign in failure – oh no! I use 1Password on a Mac with the M1 Pro Chip. For the last couple weeks, the 1Password Chrome extension has be slow and unresponsive. After starting Chrome, after clicking the 1Password extension icon, the extension takes ~15-20 seconds to open. After the extension opens for the first time after launching Chrome, it's a bit more responsive, but still takes ~2 seconds for any operations (i.e., opening the extension directly, automatic password fills, MFA popovers, etc.)

I've tried the steps outlined in this post, but it does not resolve the issue.

I'm on the latest version of Chrome, the 1Password extension for Chrome, and the 1Password desktop app:

1Password browser extension version 8.10.56.28
Chrome Version 131.0.6778.140

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Any advice on how to get the 1Password extension responsiveness back for Chrome?

Edit: Upgrading to Chrome Version 132.0.6834.84 (the latest as of January 16, 2025) resolved my issue.

Former Dashlane user trying to make the switch to 1Password and struggling a bit with how this is supposed to work. Just learned that the Chrome 1Password X extension works separately from the main Windows 10 app that I installed.

1Password X may results in having to re-enter my master password between browsing sessions, which is not my preference. My question is, what value does 1Password X bring that the non-x extension doesn't have? Trying to decide if I should change chrome extensions.

I am a longtime 1Password user who recently switched to the 1Password X extension for Chrome. For me, the big advantage of 1Password X is the inline interface, which pops up the password in the password field just as you need it. It is particularly effortless for changing passwords and two-factor authentication (and I highly recommend using 1Password for your two-factor authentication).

You have already identified the biggest downside of 1Password X: having to log in separately. But the developers are working on fixing that by integrating 1Password X with the desktop app. It was supposed to be ready by end of the year, now delayed but coming soon. https://1password.community/discussion/comment/579493/#Comment_579493

It’s a little annoying having to type in your master password twice each time 1Password is locked, but to me it’s worth it. I love the look and feel of 1Password X. It’s sleeker than the actual app.

Hey everyone, brand new to 1Password here:

Currently having issues getting the Chrome extension (2.3.7) to work. Basically, whenever I open the extension, there's a button that says "Open 1Password" which does nothing when clicked. If I disable integration with the Windows app, it prompts me for a password, after which it hangs with a loading symbol seemingly infinitely. Even if I enter in an incorrect password (or no password at all), it does the same. The farthest I've gotten is with quitting both the browser and the Windows app, reopening the browser, and then opening the extension. This opens the Windows app and prompts me for a password there, which successfully unlocks the app. On the extension, however, it simply says "Unlocking" and hangs. Attempts to click the 1Password button on field inputs fail as well.

I'm currently on Chrome version 105.0.5195.54, and my Windows 10 installation is fully up to date. If it helps, here is a list of everything I've tried:

Reinstalling 1Password 8 (the Windows app)
Reinstalling the Chrome extension
Turning off desktop app integration (and also turning it back on afterwards)
Closing the app and the browser, then opening the browser first
Closing the app and the browser, then opening the app first
Restarting the browser
Restarting the computer
Using a freshly made Chrome profile
Downgrading to 1Password 7 (extension behavior did not change)
Turning off adblocker extensions
Disabling all other extensions through chrome://extensions

Not sure what else to do, or if there is another solution out there that I couldn't find. Would very much appreciate any suggestions regarding this. Thanks!

Hey, there. I'm sorry for the trouble you've had. Though you've played around with the integration already, let's have you try these steps: Open Chrome. Right click on the 1Password icon in Chrome's toolbar and select 'Settings'. Under the 'General' section, toggle off 'Integrate with 1Password app'. Scroll down to the Accounts & Vaults section at the bottom and Sign out of your account. Clear Chrome's cache one more time by following these steps -> Clear cache & cookies - Computer - Google Account Help Fully restart the Chrome browser. Left click the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and sign into your 1Password account. After you've logged in successfully, test 1Password out in Chrome to make sure things are working. If things aren't working still after Test #1, let me know and we can troubleshoot from there. Once you've given that a shot, and if things are working, then let's have you try this: Right click the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and select 'Settings'. Under the General section toggle the 'Integrate with 1Password app' setting back on. Test things out again. And if that doesn't work, we'll need a diagnostic report from your device to take a closer look at what may be going on. Isn't the 1 Password browser extension for Chrome supposed to lock itself upon quitting/closing just the Chrome browser (not restarting or locking the windows 10 computer) then requiring 1P browser extension to be unlocked upon restarting the Chrome browser.

If you have the desktop app installed it will use it. Meaning if it is locked chrome is locked. If it is unlocked then chrome is unlocked.

So I found at post that mentioned you can turn off the option to make 1password the default password manager in Chrome via the extension and allow Chrome's password manager to continue to work.

But doing so seems to turn off 1password from catching new accounts and saving those passwords.

Is there a way to have both working at the same time so that new accounts/passwords are saved to both the Chrome password manager and 1password without having to manually create a new account in one of them?

We don't recommend running both at the same time as they tend to interfere with each other. For the best experience, letting one run the show is the best way to save and fill your passwords .

How to download Chrome extension which would work with a standalone 1Password 7 with a lifetime license? Firefox extension works just fine (and it’s what I’m using 98% of the times), but Chrome extension has been giving me headaches…

Just to clarify: I use this standalone for work because we are not allowed to store any company credentials in a cloud. I can never use 1Password 8 for work because there is no standalone version.

I have converted the old standalone extension that works with non-cloud and non-subscription 1Password v7, so that now it uses Manivest v3 and works in Chrome. The link below allows you to see the diff in files between V2 and V3 and load the extension unpacked in the developer mode of Chrome Extensions Manager. It's not possible to download and use the 1Password Classic browser extension within any Chromium browser, and Firefox really only still continues to work as they've yet to make the full transition from Manifest v2 to Manifest v3 -- which is a crucial part of the extension’s structure, as it tells browser how the extension should behave and defines things like what permissions the extension needs, what scripts it will run, and how it interacts with the browser and the web. While we really did our best to keep the 1Password classic extension up-to-date, and we held onto it for as long as we could until its last update in 2019, the deprecation of Manifest V2 in Chromium has forced us to retire it completely. Unfortunately, the technical limitations introduced with Manifest V3 require significant changes that aren’t compatible with the older structure of the classic extension.

Ive noticed that many times when trying to quickly find something using 1password chrome extension, that i always end up needing to go back to the app.

Just struggling to understand why Tag's exist if you cant even use this feature in your browser?

Is there any reason why Tagging cant be added to 1password extensions? This is just one of quite a few inconsistencies i've noticed. You can also notice that the order of certain items appears different between the two of them also.

New 1Password user coming from Lastpass. I have been using Google Chrome browser on my iPhone instead of Safari. I just realized that Apple does not allow browser extensions on Chrome for IOS. With 1Password it doesn’t give the suggestions when creating or updating the password field and it seems very limited. Also I can’t figure out how to easily generate passwords when needed on IOS. All that seems to work fine on Windows 11 with Chrome, but not from the iPhone. Am I missing something? Thanks for helping

Yeah, you've hit upon why the 1Password experience on iOS for Chrome is unfortunately worse than it is with Safari; they can only operate within the limitations Apple sets up for developers. Of course a possible solution is to switch to using Safari, but if you want to stick with Chrome you can still use 1Password—it is limited, but you can still do the important things, autofill passwords, create new logins, and generate new passwords saved in 1Password: Make sure you have iOS's AutoFill feature setup to use 1Password as an AutoFill source (and ideally the only source.) That's where you'll see logins suggested just above the keyboard, or tap on the 🔑 icon to bring up a 1Password screen. When you need to create a new login/generate a new password, you'll start in 1Password. When you're on a website's signup page, tap that 🔑 icon to bring up 1Password, tap the + symbol to create a new login, enter a username, generate a new password, and then hit Save & Fill. The new login gets saved right into your 1Password, and the website's signup form gets filled with the username and password you just generated for you to then finish the account signup.
