r/k12sysadmin on Reddit: Disable features in chrome://flags
February 25, 2025 -

Hi, does anyone know how to disable the experimental features found in chrome://flags?

There is a hardware acceleration setting that is currently breaking some star tests. We are able to disable it manually on a device by going to chrome://flags, but ideally I wouldn’t want to have to do every device one by one.

I can’t seem to find a setting in the admin console that relates to it. The closest I found was experiments, but we have that off already. I thought google would for sure let you control these features on an OU basis, but I haven’t found anything useful. Thanks in advance.

Hyper-Threading, enabling use of all of the threads of your CPU, is an example of an experimental feature flag that can be enabled. Note: Feature flags should only be enabled on your local device to test their functionality if you accept the risk of doing so, and you should not develop against them for a production implementation in your app or have end-users of apps you’re developing enable them for extra functionality. If you want to enable feature flags on your machine, navigate to chrome://flags in your Chrome browser’s omnibox; a list of flags will be available in either the “Default”, “Enabled”, or “Disabled” state.

Some of these experiments often impact browser stability. I've been able to identify and turn off some, but obviously they'll keep on coming; how do I opt out of all of them permanently? And obviously I'm not looking for a "just use a different browser." Chrome has all of my passwords.
