Hi friends,
I've got a fully loaded M1 Mac Mini on the way. I've been using my fully loaded i9 MBP 16" for over a year now and in general that thing just feels sluggish. I work in software so I do programming and usually have dozens of tabs open. Chrome is slow as heck on the Intel Mac. I really wanted to switch to Safari but it seems like this is not an option because I need to have separate sandboxes for my work accounts and personal accounts.
So how has Chrome been since it released it's native M1 compatible version?
I've been using both browsers (Safari and Chrome) for 2 months now on my M1 Macbook Air and here's what I've observed:
- I've opened 25 tabs on Chrome (mixture of youtube, google sheets and facebook and some articles). It was buttery smooth and snappy. However, the battery drains a little bit fast. Memory usage seems right considering the tabs opened.
- I closed Chrome totally and opened the same tabs on Safari. It was freaking lagging when scrolling the sites and the memory usage is almost 20% more. Some photos are also not loaded properly unless your refresh tha page. The only plus is the battery consumption which is almost 50% less than Chrome.
Do you guys have the same experience or is it just me? Kind of disappointed with how Safari is performing for me. I thought it was supposed to be tons better especially when it comes to speed.
Note that all apps and Big Sur are up to date.

I use safari...but unfortunately safari is not a supported website for taking Duolingo English tests...this is the reason...why I wanted to download Chrome on my mac...but I've heard that Chrome slows down macs and uses an excessive amount of battery...even chrome takes up a lot of RAM space...that's why...I'm confused whether I should download Chrome on my M1 pro Mac or not...
Tldr: what browser should I use?
Story: so basically I always used google chrome. But I would see my laptop feeling a little bit slower, may be just me. I recently got the new m1 air and I’ve been using microsoft edge for the time being. My laptop seems to feel “buggier” and slower but it may just be a placebo. I was wondering if you guys know what browser I should use as google chrome is so much more convenient and efficient but idk, it feels unoptimised for performance, as if it uses up all my ram
Edit 2: It seems like it only happen when I'm on a new tab & some website, other than that, things seem to work okay, and the reason I'm not on the latest version bc the latest version behave the same, so I install the previous version.
Chrome is literally unusable for me lately. The scroll , the performance, everything has been trash. Has anyone experience this lately, and for the MBP users, do you guys having the same problem like I am, I 'm really look forward to buy a MBP as my next machine and I don't want stuff like this to happen on a 3000$ laptop
Edit: just reinstalled the OS, nothing changed
I have a recent MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I'm a long time Chrome browser user and am confident with configuring it. I'm a long time Mac user and pretty much have avoided using Safari.
Recently I've been using both Safari and Chrome comparing the experience on my M1 MBA. I have to say there is a notable difference in performance between the two on the new M1 platform. Safari is far more responsive and I'll say "smoother" of an experience. Apple has done something to improve the performance and experience with Safari on these new chips.
I don't have any hard metrics but only anecdotal descriptions. Here is where I'm seeing differences:
-
Scrolling large sites with event driven graphics
-
Chrome scrolling is lurching quite often, if not jerky
-
Safari is far smoother
-
-
Scrolling response and momentum
-
Initial response in Chrome is a bit delayed and scrolling momentum speed and decay is not consistent
-
Safari response is almost immediate and momentum is appropriately proportionate to time
-
I'm not going to stop using Chrome, particularly for programming, but I won't be using it for my daily surfing tasks on my new M1 MBA any longer, at least until Chrome has equivalent performance.
The battery comsumption of google chrome on M1 macbook air is significant better than the past.
In the past, it consumed huge amount of battery. Way worse that edge browser.
Now, it is even better than edge in term of bettery life.
It is impressive for me.
