You have to start early because you have to be cleared. The Agency has a public facing web page on these opportunities. So you are looking at 9–12 months before you can be approved. You are also expected to be there a few months.

Each program has different application processes, deadlines, and eligibility guidelines, so carefully review each opportunity.

Sorry, no exceptions. You will need to apply online and that too on time. For example, if you are an undergrad looking to intern with the Agency for summer 2014, you will need to file your application by October 31, 2013.

As a Directorate of Operations (DO) Student Intern (DOSI), you will have the opportunity to work in two of three potential DO positions that drive intelligence collection and provide the vital investigative research and strategic oversight to operations that are run around the world. DOSIs are most likely to spend their summer internships serving as either a Staff Operations Officer (SOO), Collection Management Officer (CMO), or Targeting Officer (TO) to be determined based on program availability during each summer.

Application timeline is longer than most students expect. For most CIA internships, you have to apply 12 months in advance because of the security clearance process.

June 4, 2025 - Applications for the CIA Summer Internship are typically open between March and July of the previous year. That means students should start applying as early as possible to increase their chances of acceptance.

September 7, 2023 - A: The process is comprehensive, involving thorough background checks, a polygraph examination, and medical and psychological exams. There will also be interviews and possibly aptitude tests, depending on the position.

It was at that camp that I knew I wanted to join the CIA. I was a little worried they didn’t take engineers, but later learned that I could fit right into the Directorate of Science and Technology (DS&T). When I learned there was a scholarship for college students, I had to apply. This is a great internship because you’re treated like an employee.
