I have a Cibc Aeroplan Visa which states that there is a 2.5% foreign transaction fee, but when making purchases in America, the conversion rate posted to my account just shows the regular google exchange of $1.38. So where is this foreign fee of 2.5%?
When I compare it to my Amex which has no transaction fees, the difference is only a few cents difference.

The exchange rate includes the 2.5% FX fee. You probably paid $1.38 when the spot price was $1.35. The highest conversion rate in the last month is $1.36.

Go to the Visa exchange rate calculator , enter your transaction date, the amount of the transaction and the 2.5% bank fee, and you will be able to verify the fee you were charged. It is bundled into the markup on the exchange rate in addition to a separate exchange fee charged by Visa.
