Hello PFC!
I'm in dire need of some guidance on selecting a travel credit card. I want a card that will take me on adventures, not just give me cashback for buying vacuum cleaners or headphones (although that's tempting too). After some research, I've narrowed it down to three options: RBC Avion, CIBC Aventura, or CIBC Aeroplan
Here’s some background on my travel habits:
I have to do a round trip to Asia every other year, usually on Qatar Airways. I know that RBC Avion points can be converted to Avios and used on Qatar, which is great.
The years in between, I have to take one round trip to Europe. I’m not loyal to any particular airline, but I do prefer direct flights when possible.
I spend about $1500 per month on my credit card, mostly on groceries, restaurants, and online shopping.
I’m trying to compare the three cards based on these criteria:
Welcome bonus: Aeroplan is currently offering a welcome bonus of up to 50,000 points when you apply by May 28, 2023. Aventura is offering a welcome bonus of up to 35,000 points. Avion is offering a welcome bonus of up to 55,000 points when you apply by April 30, 2023
Annual fee: Aventura and Aeroplan both have $139 annual fee, but Aeroplan is waived for the first year. Avion has $120 annual fee.
Point value: This is where it gets tricky. Aventura points are worth 1 to 2.3 cents for flights, depending on the destination and availability. Aeroplan points are worth 2 to 3 cents for flights, but they use dynamic pricing and have limited seats for partner airlines. Avion points are worth 2+ cents for flights, but they have a maximum redemption value and don’t cover taxes and fees.
Based on this comparison, I’m not sure which card to apply for. I like the flexibility of Avion points, but I also like the value of Aeroplan points. Aventura seems like a good middle ground, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the annual fee after the first year.
What do you think? Which card would you recommend for my travel habits? Have you had any good or bad experiences with any of these cards? Any tips or tricks to maximize their value?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Edit: I have the Amex cobalt currently and a Tangerine MC
