Planning on seeing Ghostbusters Afterlife and eventually spider-man later this year, but how is the IMAX quality at cinemark 17? Also from a comment I saw a month ago, is it true that it's technically not "true IMAX" because they don't have an upgraded projector to fill the entire screen?

Yah so something I learned recently with Dune. IMAX here in Dallas isn't true IMAX. It's dubbed as LieMAX. It uses IMAX branded stuff but isn't the projectors and screen size you think of when you think of those giant auditorium sized screens at like NASA and stuff. It's a noticeable quality downgrade but not a significant one.

It's the best screen I've seen in the Metroplex, honestly can't go wrong seeing anything there.

Does anyone know if they will ever upgrade the Xenon projector at the Cinemark in Dallas that has the 1:43:1 screen? There are several BIG movies this summer (notably Superman) and I’m surprised that they are still using the Xenon. Have other theaters upgraded from Xenon or is it just when new ones are built? How does this work?

Cinemark has stayed as healthy as it has by choosing to not upgrade its functioning equipment and simply maintaining as much of it as possible for long term business. It will likely stay exactly the way it is until there is nothing left to do except replace it.

Sadly I'd be willing to bet that Cinemark just doesn't see any financial benefit to upgrade that auditorium, which sucks given it's one of the few 1:43:1 screens in left in Texas.

April 7, 2024 - But it seems to me that Cinemark is fairly anti-IMAX and would rather push their own XD brand. I usually just do Laser IMAX at AMC NorthPark or Stonebriar. More replies ... I don't blame them tbh. 70mm is extremely niche and running a theatre is brutal in this climate (we just lost EVERY ADH and the plano Angelika). I just wish imax and cinemark would collaborate and upgrade it to dual laser (which is unfortunately even more expensive). Dallas is a pretty huge market and it's a crying shame that we don't have a GT imax of our own.
