r/CreditCards on Reddit: Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select BUSINESS credit card approval: Why is this card treated like a Venture X by Citi?
December 9, 2024 -

I knew Citi was inquiry sensitive to an extent but wow! I’ve seen some videos on Citi and then came across a YT channel where a guy reviewed the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Business World Elite Mastercard recently. He explained in very clear terms that if you have basically ANY hard inquiries in the past 24 months, your application will absolutely be denied. That sounds worse than the VX reports I’ve heard…can anyone confirm this??? His instructions were to wait until your at 1/24 or maybe 2/24 before applying. And since I have plans for other card applications over the next 24-months I was kinda shocked that this card I really wanted has to be scratched off my list. Got a 766 FICO and inquiries are 3/24, 2/12 right now. But in 2025, I need to apply for the BoA Alaska Airlines Business card first due to their 3/12 rule (since I don’t bank with them and I opened two accounts in 2024)

I had no idea Citi just turned down applicants like that for more than 1-2 inquiries. Sure, 5,6,7+ is something I’d understand. But for 3 or 4? Are they like that on just the co-branded cards? Thanks

I can confirm that didn’t happen for me. I had 6-7 new cards (under a year old) and got approved for it. More on reddit.com

Citi Business Cards and Scrutiny
From my experience, there's no particular level of scrutiny that Citi subjects you to, either regarding approval or the nature of spend when it comes to business cards. More on reddit.com

Any data points on citi business cards?
Older ‘common knowledge’ from r/churning was that Citi required 5 years of credit history for approval for the AA business card, though even the data points that I recall on this (which are a year+ old) indicated that ‘rule’ softening in that people with 3-4 years of CC history were getting approved. TLDR: There is history indicating that 2 years and 11 months of CC history is too new for a Citi business card, and that the break point may be somewhere between 3-5 years. More on reddit.com

How hard is it to get a Citi business credit card?

Citi doesn’t offer many business credit cards, and those available require excellent credit. That means if your credit score isn’t at least 740 or above, you should consider working on your credit score before applying for a Citi business card. Other business credit cards for fair credit may be a better place to start. Alternatively, you can apply for a personal card to improve your credit score and get a business credit card later.

Do I need good personal credit to get a business credit card?

Yes, probably. Most issuers will not approve a small business a line of credit without a personal guarantee from the owner. Once a business has sufficient assets and income, it may be able to secure a line of credit without providing an owner’s Social Security number. Still, it’s up to the issuer and its risk tolerance. Call your bank to ask about specifics regarding your eligibility and application requirements.
