I decided to go frugal this winter and picked up a $35 down jacket from Walmart...

I was shocked at how cheap down jackets were selling at Walmart. Brands like SAYFUT and LANGWYQU (weird names, I know) were selling 90% down/10% feather jackets for $35-$40. Over the years, I have built a fairly large down jacket collection so I have a good idea of what makes a good down jacket. I decided to pick up the LANGWYQU down jacket from Walmart to see how they can sell it for so cheap.

The detailed video review is up on my YouTube where you can get a closer look at the Walmart down jacket. I also picked up a $1000 Canada Goose for comparison purposes. The Canada Goose will act as a baseline for what a high quality down jacket is. If you don't like watching videos then you can continue reading on where I will strictly go over just the Walmart jacket.

Materials
Let’s start off with the material, right when I open my package, there’s a strong smell of plastic radiating from the jacket. It’s so bad that I had to air it out for a couple of days before trying it on.
The shell is made from 100% nylon and the lining is also 100% nylon. This jacket is filled with 90% down and 10% feather. It weighs in at 890 grams.
How does the fabric feel? Imagine you touch a little bit of frosting from a cake and you rub it against your hands. Instead of washing it, you just leave it on for like an hour. Your hands are gonna feel sticky. And that's how this material feels when I rub my hands against it. My guess is that whatever coating they put on this jacket is not settling well on the fabric.
Features
The Walmart jacket is rated as windproof and water repellent. I took a glass of water and poured it over the jacket and it leaked EVERYWHERE. There’s a huge water spot in the center and on the sides. I didn’t even pour that much water. In conclusion, this jacket will not keep you dry in the rain.
The Walmart jacket has a total of 3 pockets plus one small pouch. There are 2 zip pockets by your belly and another small zip pocket on your left arm. There’s also a small button pouch right here. But in the interior, there are zero pockets.
For the zippers, it uses a brand called SAB which is a lot cheaper than YKK but it does the job fine. Unfortunately, there is no 2-way zip on this jacket.
The branding on this jacket is so unexpected (and probably illegal). On the left arm of the jacket, instead of a “Langwyqu” logo patch, they decided to use an Element branded patch, which is a skateboard brand! Element doesn’t even make down jackets! So I have no idea where they got this patch from and why they would even stick this onto their jackets. Element clearly didn't approve of this because that’s copyright infringement…but anyways let's move on.
Let’s talk about some positives of this jacket now. It does have a fleece lined chin guard for added warmth and comfort. It also features a stand-up collar to keep your neck cozy. The sleeves have knit cuffs that are comfortable and lock in heat so wind doesn’t slip through your arms.
Fit
Let’s move on to the fit, I got a size medium and it fits slim. With its 20” shoulder and 23” chest opening, this jacket fits more like a small so sizing up is a must and you may even go up two sizes if you plan to layer underneath.
With the jacket zipped up, I hate the texture of the collar against my skin. It’s smooth but it's very grippy especially when it makes contact with my neck and face, it feels like it's sticking and I can already tell that breathability in this jacket is absolutely terrible.
With the hood on, this is just a regular hood. It’ll keep you warm and dry during light rainfall. But if you're looking for a jacket that will protect you from heavy snow, rain and cold, then this jacket isn’t gonna do anything for you.
Warmth
Now let’s talk about the warmth. I wore this out when it was about 27°F or -3°C with windchill. After wearing a Canada Goose for 4 hours, I switched to the Walmart jacket and man the difference is astronomical. The down insulation doesn’t even feel like it’s placed evenly like for example, I can feel the windchill more in my chest area than my belly area. Even with the hood on, the windchill has no problem blowing on my face. I only wore this jacket for only about an hour and I had to call it. The Walmart jacket did not keep me warm.
Final Thoughts
~$35 for a down jacket is an incredible price but please do not go frugal on a down jacket. There are so many better budget down jacket brands out there like Eddie Bauer, where you can get a solid down jacket for around $150. The Walmart jacket is made of extremely cheap material and most importantly will not keep you warm.
