Best Thrift Stores
I shop for games, some clothes, and a little furniture. Here are my tops:
-
Avenue Thrift, Minnesota Avenue, KCK. A traditional favorite. They get a little proud of some clothes items (Unique Boutique and suits) but they do have a pretty good policy of reducing items by half each week they are out. I generally get games and knicknacks. On some occasions I have found good vintage Pyrex.
-
Savers, 95th Street, Overland Park. Savers is a chain, and they might price up a little, but this one draws on Prairie Village and gets a lot of clothes that were left at the dry cleaners down the street. I have sometimes found some real gems, like a brass fireplace fan, or some large-scale framed artwork.
-
City Thrift, Wornall, Waldo. Good at times, though it seems like a jumble at other times. City Thrift and Red Racks also have a loyalty program to earn % off, or they have day or weekend specials. Added bonus, thrift sales in Missouri are not taxed.
-
Red Racks, Wornall, Waldo. Just down the block from City Thrift. They're up-priced on games now (I'm not paying $5 for a copy of Scrabble that might have all of the pieces), but I occasionally still find something worthwhile.
-
City Thrift, Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee. Newer, and with an o.k. rotation of stuff.
-
Goodwill, Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee. This one has slipped down a lot to be a place I will only stop at occasionally, but I will still pop in for 5 mins if I think I have time. Recently found a perfect Brooks Brothers camelhair blazer in my size, but shopping here is usually a disappointment.
-
Savers, Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee. Currently running a bit higher priced, but still clean and well-organized like most Savers stores. Games are at $4 minimum, but higher for items they see as "special" (e.g., I saw copies of 3M's Win, Place, and Show and Thinking Man's Football for $10 this last week.)
-
City Thrift, Antioch, Overland Park. A bit too far south for most of my thrift store looping, but I occasionally pop in and find something. This location started pricing all games at $4+, and they are terribly organized / beat up, so I have less incentive to stop. They are also way over on their framed wall art (e.g. $40+ for some shitty mass-produced and framed watercolor).
8a) Blessings Abound, Metcalf, Overland Park. I'm not a fan of such overt religion in thrift, but they do draw a lot of stuff and have a well-maintained inventory. Maybe a little high-priced in some areas, but if you need a man's suit, they are one of the few that has good pricing and actually figures out the sizing, so you don't waste your time looking at a 40R when you know you can fit in nothing smaller than a 44R. They also have a lot of furniture, though I don't have need for big dressers, dining tables, or desks.
9) Savers, Santa Fe, Olathe. Clean and organized. Don't get there much, but I will stop in. Does not pull as much good stuff as Savers 95th.
10) Goodwill, Santa Fe, Olathe. Generally garbage, but it is across Santa Fe from Savers, so no special trip. I rarely find anything I like there, but I keep going, hoping to find something.
11) Salvation Army, Santa Fe, Olathe. Generally do not like SA for reasons, but this is another "on the way" place.
12) Salvation Army, Johnson Drive, Mission. This used to be part of a loop I would do going south out of Kansas City (City Thrift Waldo, Red Racks, [a Goodwill that no longer exists], Savers 95th, Salvation Army, Goodwill SMP, Savers SMP), but I walked out empty-handed so many times that I have generally written it off.
I've also been to the City Thrift "Outlet" on Lexington Ave in KCMO, but that place was such a wreck that I felt no need to ever return. Same for the Salvation Army Family Store on 10th in KCMO. Also, Salvation Army on Metcalf, south of 435 is on my "No, thank you" list.
