Do not use those online converters. They are horrible in general. Use Illustrator. It supports proper color management and converts correctly. Do not use Pantone/spot colours unless you will actually be printing with them (or have talked with the printer that it is ok for them to do spot color simulation for the color(s) in question.) First step is to ask the printer what color profile to use. CMYK values on their own don’t tell us much without the color profile (the profile defines what the values actually should look like). Assign the profile to your document. Reset your Illustrator color settings to one of the general purpose presets, in case you have messed with it. Converting from RGB (“hex” is just regular RGB values shown as hexadecimal instead of decimal) to CMYK is straight forward. Just use RGB values in Illustrator, and it will convert to CMYK automatically as needed (using your color profiles). If the color is within the color gamut (range of colors) of the chosen CMYK profile, the color will look unchanged after conversion. If it was outside the gamut it will shift to the nearest reproducible color. Calibrate your display to ensure you are seeing colours correctly Talk to the printer about what specs they want for the PDF. (Especially what settings to use under Output). Be aware that how a print looks on paper is fundamentally different than how it looks on a monitor. The color of the print can change drastically depending on your lighting conditions. I have a design with some text that will sit on a matte black background (think "black & gold" as the goal). I want the design to be reflective - or a metallic-gold effect to stand out over the the otherwise flat black background, similar to gold-leaf prints you might find on business cards or a wine bottle label.
A few print shops for labels use a silver BOPP permanent material to achieve metallic effects (with an option for a matte overlaminate finish, or glossy), where you leave a design-punched-out layer of white (ink which is used as a "primer" to cover the silver effect for other artwork layers) to cover the silver material for areas that don't need to be "metallic". Then you can use the matching colored design on a different layer to tint the silver punched-out area (either directly on the artwork layer, or as it's own layer above the white one) so that it has that metallic effect.
With blue, for example, it would appear shiny "metallic" blue. I'm going for a gold metallic effect similar to the gold-leaf appearance. The print shops require all colors to be CMYK, but I'm not sure what the best color mixture is to use for the bright gold metallic effect I'm looking for, if it's not just straight 'yellow' (100% Y).
Anyone have any suggestions for achieving this? There are color guides you can find online for emulating the gold effect, but I'm not sure it's the same thing as if I wanted it to appear golden when printed over the silver material. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
