So I just saw "Cocktail" this week starring Saif, DP & Diana. And I feel that it was absolutely problematic.
Like the ML is a jerk. His family is regressive.
The parallel FL breaks the girl-code/backstabs still we are supposed to support her as she is "Abla nari".
The other FL is a "bad girl" because she drinks, has hook-ups & wears short dresses. And we are supposed to feel nothing for her when she gets cheated on & her bff gets into a relationship with her boyfriend when she was the very one who helped her bff from a crisis.
The overall message is you only get the guy when you do pooja, cry frequently, is a virgin, wear long dresses & "patao" the guy's mother.
And the guy can cheat on, hook up with & stay in the house of his girlfriend but will marry the "good girl" as the girlfriend is not "wife material".
And the parallel FL is only moral when she reunites her ex-boyfriend & bff.
Overall "Cocktail" promotes a problematic message that is evident in our society.
But the most surprising part is the story is written by Imtiaz Ali who gave us strong female characters like in JWM & Highway.

It was so regressive and misogynistic. Veronica was fiercely independent, had her own place, a heart of gold for giving refuge to a total strange woman, only for her to go behind her back and get with her boyfriend. Yet she is gaslighted by her boyfriend into thinking she’s not not good enough lololol. It was a reflection of how Indian society perceives women in general. The one that drinks and have fun( things that men do too by the way) is not wife material whereas perfectly acceptable for the guy to do those exact same things because you know, boys will be boys

March 13, 2022I was looking at Deepika Padukone's filmography and realized she made many turkeys between Om Shanti Om (2007) and Cocktail (2012).
