Month’s ending and I need to pick which $20 plan is worth it for dev work – Codex or Claude Code?

Here’s my honest take so far:

Claude Code → I used to love it. Great with Python + terminal, but after the August downgrade it’s never been the same. Tried the “downgrade” version trick Reddit folks suggested it helped, but still not at that old level.

Codex → very Good at code understanding, bug fixing, and handling long Python codebases. I like the small/medium/large options… but the weekly limits suck. Also weaker in terminal tasks, slower on Windows, and keeps asking approvals every time.

So both have pros/cons. If you’re coding daily, which one feels like the real win for $20 right now? Would love to hear honest dev-side experiences before I renew.

Cursor on the other hand has a lot of options, which is cool in theory, but can be a bit overwhelming in practice. I like that the same company making the tool is training the models as they should know how to use it best and be able to give me the best price as there is no middleman that also needs a margin.

I mainly use AI for regular dev work — bug fixes, refactoring, small features sometimes big, and some vibe coding. I care about:

💰 Overall value for $20

If you’ve used both, which one would you pick and why? Any issues with limits, reliability, or real-world workflow integration?

i'd say codex 5.3 is on par with opus 4.6, but codex gives you way more usage (about ~2.25x) than claude, also right now they have 2x limits so for $20 you have waaay more usage (4x maybe) than claude, if you want ui design, opus is the best, codex has improved a lot but still can't beat opus

Right now for $20 Codex is a better value for money in terms of usage, also 5.3-Codex is touted for being a little better as of 13/20/26

I want to buy either Claude or Codex to work on personal projects during the weekends when I have time.

Claude is the best model but for $20 you'll quickly hit the quota and then justify signing up for $100 plan at which point you'll feel all powerful and start creating more and then you'll hit the quota on the $100 plan and you'll painfully fork up $200 and then realize you now have a $200/mo sub you can't get rid of. If you want the best model just accept that you're going to pay $100 -$200/mo If $20 is really the budget, Codex all the way. It is very capable.

For $20, codex wins hands down. You can get decent work done. Claude will run out of 5-hour quota in the middle of the task unless you are mostly using Sonnet and Haiku.
