I don't see anybody talk about this but Cody's just sad he was raped in first grade and most likely caused him to be hypersexual because of that trauma also his parents are very open about their sexness so that's not very good too it's really just messed up it was probably not Logan's intention but Cody is most definitely a traumatized character his friends are basically assholes to him The only person that "loves" him is a doll and I have a theory why he takes such a special interest in chef pee pee it's because he's the nicest person his parents are absolutely horrible Junior and Joseph are assholes Jackie Chu bullies him Brooklyn guy is Brooklyn guy He's abused by his father in most likely his mother too his parents hate each other they are in an abusive relationship and Cody most likely has psychosis he has a sister but barely sees her and has to take a whole lot of pills there are one and a quarter people in his life that are actually nice to him his sister who he barely sees Ken but he's a doll so and his mom sometimes it's highly hinted at that he does self-harm And he gets ruthlessly bullied. Conclusion Cody is a heartbreaking character
Okay so Iβve been rewatching a lot of SML lately (donβt judge me, itβs comfort content), and something hit me like a brick β Cody Nutkiss is literally the Stewie Griffin of the SML universe.
Let me break this down, because the similarities are honestly wild:
1. Genius-Level Intelligence
Letβs start with the obvious β both Cody and Stewie are crazy smart. Like, cartoonishly genius. Codyβs constantly building insane contraptions (built various time machines on multiple occasions) and spitting facts no one else understands, and Stewie? Dude literally is the reason his universe was created. They're both way too intelligent for the worlds they live in, which kinda isolates them but also makes them hilarious to watch.
2. Closet Homosexuality (at first)
This one's more nuanced but undeniably there. Early SML Cody was constantly "in denial" about liking dudes, but as time went on, he fully leaned into it, proudly embracing his identity. Stewie had a similar arc β started off with vague gay-coded moments and slowly evolved into a character whoβs comfortably queer, even if the show plays it for laughs. Both characters started in the closet (pun intended), but grew into their truth.
3. The Toy That Became Real
This is the kicker. Cody has Ken, the plastic doll he fully believes is alive β talks to him, dates him, treats him like a real person. In some episodes, Ken actually becomes alive, either through magic, science, or pure plot chaos. Same thing happens with Stewieβs bear Rupert. Stewie talks to Rupert like heβs alive, and in certain episodes, Rupert literally comes to life.
Itβs like both of them willed their toys into sentience through sheer obsession and narrative convenience. π
4. Pretentious Friends Who Think Theyβre Smarter Than They Are
Cody has Junior β the definition of loud and wrong. Junior is the kind of kid who will confidently say the Earth is flat, be shown video proof itβs round, and then call the camera a liar. He believes whatever nonsense he blurts out first, and nothing β not logic, not science, not even a full-grown adult explaining it β will change his mind.
Now Stewie? Heβs got Brian. Brian thinks heβs this profound intellectual β a writer, a philosopher, essentially a vast library of knowledge. But letβs be real: Brian is a scum bag who is constantly trying to sleep with his best friend/owner's wife, the man took him in off the streets and feeds him, and Brain repays that by trying to commit adultery with Lois. Brain constantly overcompensates for his lack of actual insight. When he takes up a hobby or new activity he literally becomes the definition of βthis is my whole personality now.β
Both Cody and Stewie are surrounded by βpseudo-intellectualsβ who are so sure of themselves, even when theyβre completely wrong β which makes for perfect contrast and comedy.
TL;DR: Cody is SMLβs answer to Stewie Griffin β same brainpower, same queer arc, same creepy relationship with an inanimate object that somehow gains life and similar groups of friends. And honestly? I love that for both of them.
Anyone else see this? Or am I just overthinking again? π
